Microsoft Says "Halo" Movie is Still on Hold

Microsoft Says "Halo" Movie is Still on HoldSubmit Comment
Not too long ago, Peter Jackson was all set to produce a feature film based on Microsoft's hit video game "Halo." Unfortunately, the software giant couldn't find a distributor that wasn't a competitor or willing to take a smaller share of the profits.

Jackson went on to produce "District 9" and all was forgotten. But a few days ago, it was reported that Steven Spielberg was so impressed with Stuart Beattie's script that he is now trying to resurrect the project.

Kotaku decided to investigate and has reached out to a Microsoft spokesperson to find out whether a "Halo" movie is now in development.

"We're glad there's still a lot of enthusiasm in the entertainment industry surrounding the idea of a 'Halo' movie," the spokesperson started. "That said, the 'Halo' feature film remains on hold as we focus on projects like 'Halo 3: ODST' and 'Halo: Reach'."

He added that there is "nothing further to share with respect to plans regarding a 'Halo' movie."

I think its time to give up on this one. It seems like it will be another year till they even consider it and all the games are out. New story! lol

This movie isn't on hold!

It's locked itself up just like the Microsoft's Software does!

Trust me, if they think there's another dollar to be squeezed from Halo they'll make the movie. Maybe not now but eventually it will happen.

Probably not going to happen, at least not for a long while. Possibly for the best, seeing as how video game movies usually turn out horrible when made into a movie.

I think it'll definitely happen.

It's just that, if the movie went into development now, it could possibly release near the next Halo game. That could potentially cut into the sales of either product, and Microsoft can not have that.

So I think they'll wait until "Reach" releases before starting on this bad boy. That's my theory anyway.

It's hella better than Ranger's.

:P

so basically they're trying to distance the movie away from coming out too soon or too late after another game is released???...so they can make as much money as possible off of it??...quit trippin microsoft...it's not like halo as a movie wouldn't make any money at all

"It's just that, if the movie went into development now, it could possibly release near the next Halo game. That could potentially cut into the sales of either product, and Microsoft can not have that."

That's not right at all. Releasing the film near the release date of a new version of Halo for 360 would be the better option. You could build hype for both and spend less, or spend twice what you would on just one. The old saying 'kill two birds with one stone' applies...

If they were to release the film before the new game, and the film tanked, then such a situation WOULD cut into sales for the game. And vice versa. Just by word of mouth. If either develpoed a bad rep beofre the other debutted, then that COULD impact sales. better hit the consumers before they have time to discuss and criticize.

Also, the Halo game market is very much separate from films. They command different revenues. Halo players will buy Halo games, without one though to what's in theaters (unless it's a sh*tty Halo film). Likewise, theater goers are going to pay much to what's the latest in game releases. They're looking to sit back and be entertained without having to do much but keep their eyes open.

i'd wish there could be both a really good halo game(even though i'm not a die hard halo fan or anything like that lol)...and a really good movie too

@Mink- Yeah, I get what you're saying about the killing two birds, and I agree. I hadn't thought of it like that.

Good call
