David Mamet to Direct "Diary of Anne Frank"Posted: August 12th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Disney has acquired rights to a new rendition of "The Diary of Anne Frank," to be written and helmed by David Mamet (Heist, Spartan). The film will be an amalgamation of the famed diary; the stage adaptation by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich; and Mamet's own original take on the material that could reframe the story as a young girl's right of passage.
Frank, who died at 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, became an icon of the Holocaust after the post-war publication of the diary that she kept during the two years that her family hid in a secret attic apartment in Amsterdam.
Producer Andrew Braunsberg, best known for producing "Being There," spent a year gathering the rights from the Anne Frank Estate as well as the estates of Hackett and Goodrich. He met with ICM's John Burnham, who recommended Mamet. Mamet sparked to the opportunity tell the story, and he is already writing the script.
A 1959 big screen rendition of Hackett and Goodrich's "Diary of Anne Frank" earned an Oscar for Shelley Winters. The Frank story has been told several times on TV, most recently ABC's 2001 Emmy-winning mini "Anne Frank: The Whole Story."

if Mamet does it then I supose it might be good. I just hope he isn't going so far as to draw comparisons to Schindlers List and actually make it about Anne herself.

Hasn't this been done like, oooh I dunno - 300 times? The story is great - but the movies about it are kind of as dead as those 300 spartans are. Historical and famous yes - but dead. Leave it alone and stop making remakes on remakes on remakes on remake-.... You get my point.

I can't wait to hear Anne Frank, in traditional Mamet fashion, shout the words "Fuck this fucking Holocaust!"

Get ready for David Mamet's Anne Frank: Retribution! As the Nazis open the closet door, Anne stands there, machine gun in hand, and glares into the sullen eyes of the enemy. She shouts, "Time for you muthafuckin' cockroach fuckas to get your goddamn comeuppance! It's time to be Frank!!! Anne cuts down the Nazis with a crazed look in her eyes. With her growing reputation as a badass Jewish motherfucker, she singlehandedly drives the Nazis back to Berlin. Coming summer 2011!!!

wtf?...i've seen more than 2 movies based on this story....they say there's several tv shows...and DISNEY of all companies should know well enough that this isn't a KIDS movie...that's just one thing, here's another....since when does disney start making films based on the holocaust???...i know the holocaust is an important thing for people to know...and no offense, but for disney to do this, i don't see kids begging the shit out of their mommies and daddies to see this...couldn't a different company make it?...i mean they're gonna show us in a pg or pg-13 rating what happened to these people...when an R-rating could be more realistic, or a documentary...or a film based on true events...not some silly modern made up version
