"Gunsmoke" Movie in the Works

Gunsmoke Movie in the WorksSubmit Comment
CBS Films is developing a feature reboot of "Gunsmoke" and has hired "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" writer Gregory Poirier to pen the screenplay.

The action-adventure will re-imagine Marshal Matt Dillon, the hero of the classic Western, for modern audiences. The story will serve as a prequel, exploring how the characters came to be that way. It will be set in the same American West as the original but will feature a contemporary look and modern action twists.

Poirier is said to be close to completing a first draft of the script.

"Gunsmoke," which holds the title of the longest-running primetime scripted drama (it had been the longest-running primetime series until "The Simpsons" eclipsed it this year), revolves around a number of characters in Dodge City, Kansas, at the time of westward expansion.

It focuses principally on three characters: Dillon, the crimefighting leader of Dodge; town physician Galen "Doc" Adams; and Miss Kitty Russell, owner the Long Branch Saloon. The show's plot lines revolve around dramatic, sometimes gritty, events and a fair share of outlaws and desperadoes.

So is everyone from the original cast a compost heap now?

Could be good, but are people REALLY interested in seeing Westerns these days? Sure, the modern-made western Unforgiven rocked (a long time ago), but OTOH I don't recall droves of filmgoers trampling their way to Appaloosa.

I agree. Costner has tried keeping the genre alive with his works. Have you seen Eastwood's 'The Outlaw Josey Wales'? My fav.

So, will they choose an Aussie to play Matt Dillon?

I've got and seen pretty much every Eastwood film in existence. I even have his Brokeback Mountain deleted scene on DVD.

Dude is the shit. Who would've ever thought that the guy from Rawhide would end up as such a gifted actor AND direcotr. Doesn't he write and do music too? That's some old school talent.

On the flip side, can someone PLEASE tell Sam Elliot to stop beating the damned horse to death? He's a gifted actor, no doubt, but even at his age he can diversify. No more Westerns 'doc'!

A good western these days is hard to find, although I do think there's an audience for them with 3:10 to Yuma bringing in 77mil at the box office. Even Appaloosa I could enjoy.

Sam is married to Katherine Ross! I'd pay to sniff his dick after he threw one into her!

How about a Bonanza movie. It could be titled The Revenge of Hopsing.

ON this story though. I met Ken Curtis (played Festus on Gunsmoke) about 100 years ago. Nice enough man.

Starring: Tyrese Gibson, Jason Statham, Samuel J Jackson, Ice Cube, Ed,die Griffin Shia Lebouf and Nic Cage. If any of these actors are attached, it WILL suck.
