"The Orphanage" Remake Hires DirectorPosted: August 5th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Actor/producer/director Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter) has signed on to helm "The Orphanage," New Line's remake of the Guillermo del Toro-produced Spanish-language horror movie. Fessenden also has written the script with del Toro, who is producing the new film.
The 2007 pic was directed by del Toro protege Juan Antonio Bayona and centered on a woman who, upon returning to the orphanage where she grew up, discovers that her son's imaginary friend is the same person who terrorized her when she was a child.
Del Toro and Fessenden know each other from the horror circuit and saw in him a filmmaker who understood the conventions of the horror genre and could execute a movie that would be as scary and disturbing as the original but in an American context.
The project is in search of a lead actress.

I watch many foreign films, but this movie was a big let down for me. It could be good. Why do people always complain about remakes? they're like song covers. Get over it.

Just get the f*cking DVD and listen to the english voice over if you're too lazy to read. God, America is falling behind in every which way.

God damn. At least Guillermo's on board, but theres no f*cking need to put money into remaking a perfectly good movie from two years ago in America. Just because we're too stupid and arrogant to see a foreign film doesn't mean our stupidity should be catered to, that we should be so spoiled as to have "our own" version of every good movie thats ever made. f*ck man.

@Skippy Spartan can't non-american detractors make less generalizing blanket statements? Would you make the same generalization about the Baliwood films? Some of them are remakes and sh*ttier ones (maybe) than the movies coming out of the US; so Hindi as a first language Indian ppl don't want to read subtitles either? It's the studios that remake these films, it's not like the american public is clamoring for and petitioning this crap to be rehashed. In he end, we all lose.

@SKIPPY SPARTAN, I agree with u completely, this film is two years old, and just because it has subtitles they feel they need to remake this film. Its bullsh*te, its a needless reason to spend money to make money scheme. and @ i3u7n5 im sorry not trying to be rude here, but its stupid they are making this just because it has subtitles, and most americans wont watch it. (Note I said most not all, so im not sterotyping others or anything. just generalizing) where in Bolliwood, they completely redo the films they remake, they make them into musicals and stuff.. What Fessenden is ripping it off, where what India does is something completely different.. yeah the story line is the same, of course, but the language, sex and violence is altered completely... so yeah i think it is f*cking stupid they are remaking this...

It's absolutely stupid, I agree, there are allll kinds of awesome movies being made all over the world and rarely, if ever, are the Hollywood remakes even remotely comparable but I don't agree with the assertions that get tossed around on this site and others like it that it's a "lazy/stupid american" thing. You have to take into account that the rest of the world doesn't have much of a choice but to watch movies with subtitles as most of the films, especially the big blockbuster movies are english language. So lack of choice on the part of the non-english speaking world in reading subtitles doesn't indicate a greater level of sophistication.

screw it...i've been watching subtitles as a little kid and as annoying as it was then...i've learned to read and just got better ever since...dumb americans should really stop this nonsense...anyone ever seen 'babel' with brad pitt?...i'd like to see the next idiot try to remake that and find actors that can do better than the obvious choices that are made for these roles and should not be tampered with
