"Captain Blood" Remake to be Set in Space

"Captain Blood" Remake to be Set in SpaceSubmit Comment
Warner Bros has signed Michael and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers) to direct and John Brownlow to write a new version of "Captain Blood," the 1935 swashbuckler pirate classic about a wrongly imprisoned British doctor who escapes to become a pirate in the Caribbean.

To separate their movie from all the other pirate films, Warner Bros has decided to set the remake in space. "At first, I felt like I was in that scene in 'The Player,' where Buck Henry pitches the sequel to 'The Graduate,'" said producer Bill Gerber. "But when I took a look at their animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that, that I said, 'Great, I get it.'"

Gerber said that despite the radical period and venue switch, the film will be fairly faithful to a plot in which the doctor, Peter Blood, joins up with a French pirate, only to clash with the buccaneer when the woman he loves is captured by the pirate skipper.

"There are some things you don't mess with, and that is as classic a movie storyline as you will ever find," Gerber said.

Oh yeah, real good idea, since Treasure Planet was such a success.

Damn, I'd rather see a 'Billy Budd' (from the guy that wrote Moby d*ck)sci-fi remake. Call it Budd Rogers.

"There are some things you don't mess with, and that is as classic a movie storyline as you will ever find," Gerber said...with a straight face, I bet, after getting set to rape yet another film with a stupid and unecessary remake, and therefore completely contradicting his own claims. These Hollywood execs kill me, with their accute dislike for anything original.

You guys should check out the brilliant trailer for Daybreakers to get an idea of what they can accomplish with a small budget. These guys are a very creative duo whose bigger budget on the project should allow them to make some insane visuals in the space environment. Go, Spierigs! Hopefully they get a good script to bring to glorious life.

Trailer? Just watch Undead...there's enough low budget creativity in that one to get your mind spinning. They're DIY filmmakers thats for sure.

I just suggested people to watch the trailer because 1.) It is a damn good trailer that shows off their visual style and 2.) Undead shows their creativity as well, but it is obviously a less accomplished work artistically and it is hard to find a copy of it usually. I just wanted everyone to see something they can access quick to show skeptics that they have major talent. Plus, the trailer includes Wilem Dafoe with a crossbow and Sam Neill as a bigwig yuppie vampire. Too cool. Also has a cool song by Placebo (Running Up that Hill).
