Peter Jackson Gives "Halo" Update

Peter Jackson Gives "Halo" UpdateSubmit Comment
Last we heard, Microsoft couldn't find a distributor for their "Halo" film and didn't feel comfortable with Neill Blomkamp (District 9) directing a movie based on one of their biggest properties. Eventually everything fell apart and now Blomkamp is saying that he will never helm a "Halo" movie, even if it gets back on track.

IGN caught up with Peter Jackson, who was signed on as a producer and has put in months of work on the project, to find out the current status of the film.

"We don't control 'Halo,' we were simply just involved at that time to make the movie," he explained. "The rights were with Universal and Fox, but now they reverted back to Microsoft, who developed the game."

He continued: "And I think Microsoft wants to figure out what to do with 'Halo.' It was a distressing experience for us when the film fell over and it was distressing for Microsoft, because they wanted to see a film made. The studio politics was the reason why it fell over. They had a bad experience as well. They are just trying to figure out what their relationship with Hollywood is. If any company can make a film independently without the need of a Hollywood studio, it would be Microsoft. Maybe that's what they will choose to do and maybe they'll come back to us to talk to us. I'm not sure."

Part of the problem has been finding the right studio to distribute, since Sony is competing with Microsoft in the game console industry and Disney/Pixar (Apple) is competing with the company in the MP3 player area. That leaves Universal and Fox, and both studios wanted to take a huge chunk for distributing, which Microsoft didn't want to give up. At the same time, Microsoft doesn't want to get into the movie business, which is why they are not developing the film themselves.

Microsoft is being like that kid in grade school who never gave a piece of his gum to anyone.

I'm actually kind of hoping MS does it themselves. Think of it: Marvel is doing thier own films and have been better for it thus far. If MS does do it, they don't have to worry about outside 'influences' when it comes to the overall look and the story. They wouldn't have to worry about them fckheads at Fox making it their own pile of sht.

No one is forcing Microsoft to give it to FOX. They could give it to a better film company like WB or Sony, Universal or even MRC.

They're being babies.

we're talking about microsoft here...and not just them...other movie companies that aren't apparantly broke...so i just don't understand what's so hard to get this sh*t goin...there's really no harm in starting from scratch at this point...but their the ones handling it so it's up to them....as for me...didn't really get too into halo...and for those who did that pay attention the film's status...they'll give up waiting after too long...except for extremely dedicated ones of course

do it independently. too much studios get eager and thats usually when things turn bad.

Thanks leezy.

I think microsoft probably wants to hit the nail on the head on the first take with this movie, they want it to be a huge hit like the videogame. Theyre obviously afraid its gonna end up something like Resident Evil or Tomb Raider and dont want to hand over profit off of a property they built up themselves to the entrenched studio heads. I hadn't thought of the conflict of interest thing with disney and sony though, that is definitely interesting.

Microsoft doesn't trust anyone with Halo, even though Blomkamp has proven that he's more than able to handle the f*cking movie in a filming style that fans of the game and casual gamers are fine with.

what microsoft SHOULD do is hire some highly skilled writers, good ones....have them watch the entire gameplay of the first game...then do as best as they possibly can to translate all that into a movie....but i honestly don't know about this as a movie....some things are better left for gameplay...i dunno why...but to me, when games are meant to stay as games, the story is much more exciting

Why not get into the movie business? You're already competing with Sony and Disney, so what's the big problem?
Space_Ghost11 writes:

here's an idea: DONT f*ckING MAKE THE FILM! IT'S GONNA SUCK! the games are over hypted anyways, they are okay but not the best f*cking games ever made.
minkowski writes:

They'll have to BUY a studio just to do it right, like how they did Halo right by buying Bungie.

why does hollywood have the money dildo so far up their ass?...you can see it coming out of hollywood's mouth everytime they make a bad movie
