"Atlas Shrugged" to Become a Mini-Series?

"Atlas Shrugged" to Become a Mini-Series?Submit Comment
Angelina Jolie has been in talks for "Atlas Shrugged" for years and very recently filmmaker Vadim Perelman, who is best known for his Oscar-nominated "House of Sand and Fog," revealed that he's all done with the script for the adaptation and confirmed that Jolie is still very much attached to the project. He added that the plan is to start filming in December.

Now, THR is reporting that Charlize Theron has been meeting with Lionsgate during the past several months to discuss starring in "Atlast Shrugged." But not the movie, a mini-series. Mostly because nobody believes that a film could capture the many nuances of the monster-sized novel.

If Theron takes the part, she will play a powerful railroad executive, Dagny Taggart, who struggles to keep her business alive while society is crumbling round her.

So it's going to be very vital, very important, and intensely boring.

Charlize Theron is much much better than Angelina.

It seems, if this news is accurate (and that's a big IF when it comes to WP), Jolie would probably be producing which I'm fine with. The novel would be nearly impossibly to do in three hours (and I would think they wouldn't even try for two) and most people don't want to sit in a theater for FOUR hours. Plus, theaters don't want four hour films because that means fewer show times. My guess here is that it'll be a cut-up, hacked network miniseries with a lot of promise and no delivery. If they wanted to do this right, they'd do a maxi-series (twelve episodes or so) and put it on one of the stations that don't rely heavily on ad revenue. Showtime and HBO would be the best candidates but I wouldn't mind seeing it on TBS. They've done things like this before and sometimes do it without commercials. I'll be watching this one closely.

Why do the take one of the most boring and dumbest books ever written? Read it and you'll know that this project will be crap - with or without Angelina...

Did you read it, burpie? Because I thought it was pretty damn amazing. I've always wanted to see someone try and pull this off.

It would work pretty well as a mini-series, but a movie would be a whole day long! and Charlize Theron I am okay with.

Ayn Rand was a fraud. The same principles she espoused she also defied. She made herself a god within her own circle of elitist little friends while extolling the virtue of selfish individualism. Objectivism my ass.

With the respect to the film, why give a role to Jolie, not primarily an actress but a vapid sex symbol, for a film based on a heady and psuedo-intellectual book? I mean, do they realize the boring nature of the work involved, and figure they simply must sex it up just to get anyone on the planet to watch the film? Or are they distilling the plot points and ejecting the dubious fringe quasi-philosophy?
minkowski writes:

I'm speaking of the film, not the mini-series. I mean, are they talking about a Showtime mini-series, Lifetime mini-series, or network mini-series? TV is watchable in that descending order.
Gunslinger writes:

Come on, Mink. If you'd read the book, which is obvious from your comments that you didn't, you might know that the female lead is supposed to be extremely attractive. I think either Jolie or Theron could work.
minkowski writes:

I read it some twelve years ago. And Jolie isn't merely 'attractive', she's a pure raw and overused symbol of every teenage boy's 'ideal' woman. Her presence, despite her subdued presence throughout Changeling, would render the film as little more than a showcase for her blatant sexuality. In my mind, anyway.

You're high.

I'm with minkowski, Ayn Rand can suck it. A movie of this book would be about as exciting as Ayn Rand's Russian workcamp days. You just know that the Hollywood d-bags who are producing this movie see this book as their bible. So they're going to pull a Mel Gibson, and Passion of the Christ the hell out of it. Instead of brutal torture scenes, picture Angelina, heaving bosom and all, railing in long winded trite metaphors against the tired and weak. That's why the producers needed a series as long as the Stand (or Mash) to restate in all the myriad of mixed metaphor that Rand uses, to say "pick yourself up by your bootstraps and stop being so damn lazy." It pisses me off that this women is celebrated for effectively espousing/creating a cult/philosophy that vilifies charity/altruism, and celebrates selfishness.

All I can say in her favor is that at least she practiced what she preached; supposedly sleeping with her protege, upsetting his marriage, and for all intense in purposes behaved like an ugly, angry, husk of Dagny Taggart.
