Guy Ritchie's "Guys and Dolls" Remake is a Rumor?Posted: July 15th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
The Sun recently reported that Guy Ritchie (Snatch, RocknRolla) is looking to remake "Guys and Dolls" with Justin Timberlake and Jason Statham taking over for Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra.
But a movie without the cooperation of the estate of Frank Loesser, who wrote the music and lyrics, cannot be made. Allen H. Arrow, an attorney who represents the estate, contacted Ritchie's representatives and found out that Ritchie has never claimed to be directing the film.
"I can't tell you what is happening, but I can tell you what is not happening, and that is this Guy Ritchie version," Arrow said.
As it turns out, 20th Century Fox has been working on a rights deal for "Guys and Dolls" that would star Hugh Jackman in the Sky Masterson role, originally played by Brando.
When asked if that's something that could happen, Arrow replied: "We are not opposed to that development. This musical survived even the recent Broadway revival, and as bad as that was, they couldn't kill it. If the terms are proper in the scenario you describe, that could happen."

I could see Baz directing this, ewan mcgregor taking over Franks part. But should they really remake a Brando film. I dont think so. Whats next Mutiny on the Bounty. Jackman is good but not that good.

Actually, Baz Luhrman is a really good choice for a musical like this. Guy Ritchie... not so much. He gets too much credit due to Snatch, a film that Pitt and Statham stole, overshadowing even Ritchie's deft and competent hands, and Lock, Stock... which I didn't care for. Surprisingly for me, Revolver was much better than I had heard.

i HOPE this is just a rumor...this sounds like a terrible idea. G&D is classic, there's no need to change it
