Can't wait! At last something to wash away the filth of the Transformers-like crap-fests of this wretched summer.

I love that this is rated R. The trailer backs it up pretty well already. Making the aliens walking talking roaches was a great idea. Can't wait to see this!

Finally, some socially relevant, thought provoking sci-fi! And Transformers could've been amazing, beyond imagination, but they gave it to the wrong writers and director. One film is precocious, the other is an abortion performed by Captain Hook.

ok, NOW will someone let these guys make HALO!?!?
minkowski writes:
on July 8th, 2009 at 9:06:07 PM

Jackson is only PRODUCING. No more. No need to make a connection to Halo just necause he's producing on this film. And MS will make Halo when they make an OS that properly reflects the design needs of the average user.

Never.
Cd_Smith0 writes:

Yeah, but Mink maybe this will prove that these two can do the Halo series justice. I mean i know its a long shot but maybe this is the proof a studio needs for them to put the money into these two to make halo what it should be. Either way this looks amazing.

@Cd_Smith0: You can't trust Microsoft. Ever. Anything they're involved in will get screwed. It isn't anyone else I'm really concerned about. MS can't deliver, or if they do, it's ALWAYS on their lop-sided terms. As long as they own Bungie and the rights to Halo, expect delays and problems. Sorry to say.
holtlt writes:

If this movie shows its high potential at the theaters, I have no doubt that if Neil is willing to, the studios and companies will give him a green-light without hesitating to make Halo. We'll just have to wait, Halo's time hasn't come yet.
dhkenobi writes:

Holy sh*t... That's pretty much all I can say about it.

And Mink...this is in a way related to Halo.

One of the many reasons behind the Halo films current state is because of Blomkamps inexperience with feature-length films, regardless of Jackson's backing. Another reason is because those who are involved in wanting Halo to get made are refusing to hand over creative control over to the Studios and I applaud their loyalty to the Halo Universe.
Grumblestyle writes:

Isn't Jon Cho in this one?
minkowski writes:

Microsoft has had nearly two years to find a distributor. Why haven't they found one already? Doesn't take two years to do so.

Now, Neill Blomkamp may be all that and a bag of chips, but he hasn't made a feature length film until District 9. I don't expect this film to carry the water a lot of you are hoping for. I just don't see it happening. I'm sure it'll be something of a success, make some money, earn some good reviews, but Halo, the film, is a mssive undertaking. Major money, major deals.

Now, the theory is, I see, that District 9 will become something a smash success, and Halo will get made. I dunno. I don;t see any evidence that Universal and Fox dropped out because of wariness about the director. Seems they dropped because of Microsofts demands:

From here: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Halo_(Film)

"Microsoft released Garland's completed screenplay to various Hollywood studios on June 7, 2005, looking to be paid a $10 million fee as well as the studio's agreement to adhere to guidelines set by the game's developers. Microsoft also wanted the studio to seek approval over the director and cast. In addition, Microsoft sought full merchandising rights for itself, a minimum $75 million budget, and company representatives' full access to the film's rough cuts in Los Angeles. Studios like Paramount, DreamWorks, Sony, and Warner Bros. did not want to cede creative rights to the film and passed over the project."

Not an issue concering the director, AKAIK. Halo is a massive issue, and the REAL question is whether a market exists outside the young male game-playing demographic. In order to bring the game to the screen you need MAJOR cash. Studios don't want to risk that kind of cash on a film that may fail to reap the appropriate profits. Transformers 2 gets a 200 million dollar budget, sure, but everybody knows Transformers. They've been around for nearly thirty years! Even girls played with them. Halo, not so much.

For a studio to put all that money into the film with the demands Microsoft expects, is like being a passenger on the Titanic. You paid for the ticket, you know the destination, but you don;t enough control to avert disaster. Microsoft may think Halo will be a smash film, but studios are upping the cash, Microsoft's product confidence notwithstanding.

"District 9 is released. It is directed by Neil Blomkamp and produced/presented by Peter Jackson. Some believe this film is a test for studios to see what Neil is capable of before moving onto a true Halo project. "

Again, this is wishful thinking. Maybe Halo will get made, maybe not, but to think the main issue is mostly an untested director is simply unrealistic.

"Another reason is because those who are involved in wanting Halo to get made are refusing to hand over creative control over to the Studios and I applaud their loyalty to the Halo Universe."

Has very little to do with loyalty to Halo, my compadre, it's about risk. It's about venturing your money on a losing deal. A film like Halo will cost mucho dinero, and to invest that kind of money and not get enough of the creative control to ensure product quality is a problem to the money men. ha snothing to do with some sort of loyalty to a video game most of these film millionaires care enough nothing about. It's about MONEY, that's it.

Sure Peter jackson and some of the writers care, but not the guys with the cash.

holtlt writes:

Well as for a Halo movie, budget can also be a big problem, maybe bigger than Transformers now if you think about...
vaodsi writes:
on July 9th, 2009 at 12:32:49 AM

i heard this was made for thirty million.
that is awesome.
is it just me or was star wars so much better when Lucas had a budget limit?
It almost seems like when there's a (moderately tight) budget limit, so much more attention goes into STORY and CHARACTER and EVERYTHING THAT MAKES A MOVIE INTRIGUING! Not like the super expensive transformers. Suddenly, with so much money and fx and NO story worth a crap, it just becomes masturbation. Yes, transformers was Bay cinematically masturbating.
acslaterson writes:
on July 9th, 2009 at 12:46:53 AM

^^^I totally agree, but making Halo without that big budget is going to be extremely hard. Especially if they want to do Star Trek type CGI(snow planet chase?!).

WOW!! this looks awesome. Its good to see some people in hollywood still have the balls to put out a decent MA rated movie. Seems that everything gets toned down to a lower rating with the idea of more people would go watch it.
