George Clooney in New Jack Ryan Film?

George Clooney in New Jack Ryan Film?Submit Comment
It was recently announced that Sony Pictures has acquired George Clooney's production deal, but hidden in the announcement is a line that mentions that Clooney is interested in playing Jack Ryan if Paramount moves to revive the Tom Clancy series.

Back in October, Harrison Ford revealed that after playing Jack Ryan in two films (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger) he would love to make a third one. But in December, screenwriter Hossein Amini was hired to write a new installment and the plan was to make a prequel.

A prequel means that Ford is out of the running, but so is the 48-year-old Clooney since Ben Affleck was only 30 when he played the character in "Sum of All Fears."

But Clooney is the type of star that Paramount would want to sign. So only time will tell whether the studio will reconsider the prequel route or if someone like Shia LaBeouf will take over the franchise.

No worries. Shia will either O.D. or write himself off in a vehicular accident long before he gets to this one.

Clooney as Ryan makes too much sense.

Yes on Clooney. No on Shia... as Ryan... ever.
Farradin writes:

Best choice ever. Ever since the Harrison Ford entries it has always seemed to make sense that he was slightly older. This is his franchise!!!

Clooney can def work this role. Especially with the later books about Ryan. Hell if they want they can bring on Shia as his son. But definitely ink up Clooney for this.

^^ true, especially the one with ben affleck, that one was awful.
minkowski writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 10:16:23 PM

No. Sick of this guy. Ryan Reynolds could work if the guy would get serous for a second. He did well in Smokin Aces, and he's got a look that with a little scruffiness, could lend him the hardened work ethic look while still retaining that Harrison Ford soft charm and vulnerability.
acslaterson writes:

I have just downloaded Kindle on my iPhone and have never read and of the Jack Ryan novels, suggestions? And Clooney would be awesome in the role, too bad he isn't younger.....
Ranger writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 10:19:49 PM

Good call. I saw Smokin Aces only this weekend... I liked it. Aside from all the strong characters and solid performances... a .50 cal. in an urban setting always makes a movie a little more interesting.
Ranger writes:

@hbomb28 - I'm not a Shia-hater. The kid has done amazingly well for himself (even though he wants more than friendship from Megan... guess he's getting tired of being IN LOVE with his Mom), but he's too young and jittery for the suave Jack Ryan.
minkowski writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 10:49:20 PM

Shia doesn't have the look or the attitude, nor the personality. He's good playing the goofy sidekick, the unheroic teen in bad stuations. Jack Ryan is bold, he's decisive, he's a loving father and a man confident with both a gun and his bare knucles. He's the button-down family-oriented beaurocratic CIA version of James Bond. He possesses style, charm, intelligence, loyalty and wit, and can efface those qualities with a mere smirk.

Shia belongs in War Games, not Patriot Games. He's never carried the lead role in a serious film. Never. Not Holes, not Disturbia, defintely not TF. And I don't know if he can. He's too young, too unseasoned. He's too quirky, awkward and lacks either purpose or confidence. His roles are always him falling into a bad situation and stubling for a solution. He needs another ten years in the Hollywood oven.
Adamtheflash writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:11:03 PM

I agree somewhat with you Minkowski. I think someone of a Ryan Reynolds caliber could pull off this role, but not Reynolds himself. Perhaps someone like Chris Pine or Chris Hemsworth as a young Jack Ryan. Not that I'm getting off on Star Trek or anything. I just can't see writers resisting Reynold's humorous side.

Definitely not Shia, I'm sick of Shia. Anytime there is talks about a young actor in a movie, Shia's name comes up. I think it's time to expand Hollywood's youth a little bit.
Ranger writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:23:33 PM

@Adam - have you seen Reynolds in Smokin Aces? Pretty serious role there.
minkowski writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:23:57 PM

Yeah, see that's the issue, Reynolds hasn't worked hard enough to distance himself from that goofy side of acting, but he has the merit. He has the ability. Two movies, Smoking Aces and The Amityville Horror, showed me a glimmer of Reynolds ability, and he has the look, most importantly.

Neither of those films had Reynolds under the thumb of a really good director, either. He has the personality. He's tall, very much in shape, and could pull it off without a doubt IF and ONLY IF he can keep the goofiness out. (The fact he's aiming for Deadpool roles and not more serious ventures leaves doubt, though. This may be less his fault and more Hollywood typecasting him as a likeable goof. Typecasting sucks, just ask David Duchovny)

And you're right, I have no idea, but suspect the writers, if imagining him for the role, would slip in some slapstick remarks or silly scenes.

Furthermore, Reynold's even looks like a 'Jack', but does Shia? Shia's overrated. He's the class clowns actor, he's the actor that reminds a lot of people of eother themselves, or someone they like or once knew and liked. The guy you pal'ed around with on the playground. He's NOT the guy you'd ask to save you from terrorists. He couldn't even hold his own in Eagle Eye, and any film that places him in the role of heroic leading man is doomed to farcical failure.
coldplayesence writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:25:14 PM

Exactly, this days "young= Shia" and well "HOT= Megan Fox" I really really hate Bay
acslaterson writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:33:54 PM

@mink, have you seen Californication? He has def. broke his typecasting with that role.
minkowski writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:48:47 PM

Haven't scene it, but I've heard. It seems his second typecasting trope is something of a sexual deviant. Redshoe Diaries, Mulder's porn obsession, his real life sex addiction, Twin Peaks, et cetera. Most people know him as Mulder, and when they see him, they see only the likeable X-Files cad. That's if they've seen the show.

So, maybe so, but he'll always be Special Agen Fox Mulder to me. That's how I like to remember the guy.

Exept for seasons 7-9.
acslaterson writes:

I watched Kalifornia a couple of weeks ago and it is interesting to see the two types of careers Pitt and he have had. If he had kept at the movies and avoided TV maybe he would be a bigger star. I don't mind though, I loved "The X-Files" series(especially watching it while babysitting my 3 younger siblings and giving them nightmares, hahaha).

THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is masterpiece, PATRIOT GAMES kicks ass, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is underrated, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS is decent even if Affleck is extremely miscast. f*ck the haters.

I've enjoyed all the Ryan stories. At least there twists and turns here and there. Some pretty realistic action. And Anne Archer... Mmmmm... But yeah, I've found them all pretty enjoyable.
minkowski writes:

minkowski writes:

Sadly, I do face it. I really loved his first movies, especially Raiders...
acslaterson writes:

If he nails the Lincoln biopic it will put him back on top, if he ever f*cking gets to it.
minkowski writes:
on July 7th, 2009 at 12:42:48 AM

He had Minority Report and he had Catch Me If You Can, both decent 2002 films. Then, he had The Terminal, WotW, Munich and IJ:KotCS. Not too good. Now he's tied up with TinTin, a movie about Old Yeller or something, Lincoln, biopic that might work and Old Boy with Will Smith.

To be honest, he's about fifty-fifty, and with his spate of recent less-than-stellar films, he's due for something better. I hope.

But I suspect the dude is simply losing his magic.
Ranger writes:
on July 7th, 2009 at 12:43:33 AM

And Schlinder's List... don't forget that one. And he did Co-Produce Band of Brothers. But Min. is right... those are all a while back already. He may have lost his spark, or he's just all used up. I wouldn't fault him though. What a body of work for one lifetime.

And war of the worlds was pure popcorn. It was a less childish mars attacks. Hold up the day the earth stood still to it, and it's hard to fault it.

Old boy I have little hope for. I can't imagine it NOT being toned down. The great thing about the original Old Boy was that it left you feeling just a little queasy. I can't imagine Spielberg doing queasy..

@ Ranger's earlier comment:
Yeah I saw Smokin Aces. Loved Reynolds in that. I just think that it happens so rarely that people can take him seriously. And like Minkowski pointed out, I don't think Reynolds is seeking those serious roles out. I just don't see writers using him right in a Jack Ryan role.
acslaterson writes:
on July 7th, 2009 at 11:17:38 AM

Reynolds is doing that one man movie, that seems like a serious project...
Ranger writes:
on July 7th, 2009 at 11:35:37 AM

Yeah, Reynolds seems to be the guy to watch these days. Superhero, dramatic (Smokin Aces), One-Man Show. He seems to be covering it all. If they all pan out for him he'll be a Superstar. I give him credit for not sticking to the safe(r) stuff. But for this article, Clooney is still my fav. pick for Ryan. He was even my first choice for Tony Stark. But now that we've seen Downey in that role (and he's done it well), it would be harder for people to accept (or care to think about) Clooney for Stark.
ACTIONFIGURE writes:
