Why is Stan Lee in the "Venom" Spin-off?

Why is Stan Lee in the "Venom" Spin-off?Submit Comment
Even though "Spider-Man 4" is being made, it seems that a "Venom" spin-off is also still a possibility. And while Stan Lee had nothing to do with the creation of the villainous character, writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have revealed that they have written a cameo for him anyway.

"Oh, yeah. Stan Lee is in it," Reese told SuperheroHype. "I feel like that's the one thing we can say. He does appear in our script, and we're very specific about where he is and why. May he live forever. Let's hope he's in many movies to come."

"Venom" will likely be a big earner, but Todd McFarlane (real creator of the character) believes that a film based on a villain would likely not be very good.

"I'm thinking about how they want to make anti-heroes nowadays," he said, citing Halle Berry's disastrous turn in "Catwoman" as an example. "Those don't work. The reason they're so cool as a bad guy is because they're bad. And as soon as you try to give too much humanity to them, then you go, 'No! Now they're not as good as a bad guy because you're trying to redeem them'."

"Catwoman" sucked because of the director. Not because it was an anti-hero film.

^^ Damn right. Anti-hero movies can be great, but they need to be in good hands.

Why... was there ever a doubt Stan Lee should be in this movie. He sure as hell better be! This one and every other Marvel movie that comes out for the rest of his life. The man is a genius!

Todd gave me some of his drawings (which I still have) of Spawn back in the early 80's. Who knew that would eventually influence the development of Venom?

Todd McFarlane forget about Wolverine. Previosly Wolvie is a bad guy for hulk
Ranger writes:

I believe that was after my days of collecting. But I know he (Todd) didn't like the restrictions at Marvel (I don't think that's a very big secret).
Ranger writes:

So he may not have had (more than likely he did not) any control over that.

Yeah, Catwoman was just god awful. I'm kinda sick of all the hero sh*t anyway. I would love to see more anti-hero movies. Most of the time the characters are more interesting to watch.
Ranger writes:

@mattcl23 - they superhero movies would be better if they stuck with Lee's/Kirby's and Ditko's original vision for these characters. Historically... whenever Hollyweird has strayed from those stories... they failed (ie: 1st Hulk and they brought his dad into it?!?!). Also, the Industry has an untapped resource with all these superheros, making them billions. This trend won't die out soon. Captain America circa WWII and Thor will be tougher mountains to climb, and necessary (obviously) to get to the Avengers. So it'll be interesting to see how they pan out.

lee is an old hack who never created sh*t...thats right, he created nothing...you all need to understand the "marvel way" of making comics...lee mightve gotten story ideas, but it was the artists like ditko and kirby that came up with the true creations...and if you need proof....name one character that lee created after both kirby and ditko left marvel....the man is a f*cking hack

hmm, maybe Stan Lee is a fake...OH WAIT!! But he's creating five superheroes(not sure about details) for a publishing place(Marvel?),so yeah, he did(and does) create characters, f*ckface(oh and you too Ranger)

U know what its stan. Let him have cameo's in other films as well. All u haters keep hatin because when your being hated that usually means your doing something right. So hell yeah let the old man have his time, he deserves it.
Gunslinger writes:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but without Stan there would have been nothing to spin off from.

Now back to the topic at hand: Stan Lee. Stan IS the Man! Nuff said.

VENOM SUCKS!!
mmacny1 writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:12:20 AM

movie venom did suck, but comic venom is insanely perfect for his own movie, if they do it right, which they wont. and venom wouldn't exist if it weren't for stan lee, plus he was a higher-up at marvel when venom was created so who knows where the original idea came from? it could've been lee, who deserves all the credit he gets. granted, marvel artists had a lot of freedom, but lee invented those characters, without question, including their appearances.
Ranger writes:
on July 6th, 2009 at 11:47:27 AM

Venom was all Todd McFarlane's idea.
