Oscars Could Lose "Best Original Song" Category

Oscars Could Lose "Best Original Song" CategorySubmit Comment
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced that the Oscars will have ten Best Pictures nominees, instead of the previous five. Now a new rule is revealed, this time targeting the Best Original Song category.

In an announcement, the academy said that there is a chance that the Best Original Song will be completely removed from the next Oscars if no one song hits 8.25 in its scoring system for song nominations.

If a song achieves that, then it will be nominated along with the next highest-ranking song. If two or more songs get 8.25, then they will all be nominated, up to a maximum of five.

Under the old system, there were a maximum of five and a minimum of three nominees.

Can't rival Randy Newman. Just wait for Toy Story 3. It'll sweep.

I bet Three 6 Mafia and the South Park guys are pissed they wont be able to win another Oscar now.

It does take a lot of time , but place some new catogory in it.

The problem was when they started nominating trash...South Park didn't win best song- but it certainly was the mark of the categories downfall where they stopped choosing tunes for lyrics and soul and just threw it out like an MTV award for whatever was most popular. You see nominations are bought by the studios and they throw promotion money at their titles in the same way as presidential candidates. So movies with truly inspiring songs lose out to the hyped up and financially backed crap. If your studio cant afford to promote your film as an Oscar nominee- You lose.

Good thing Fox Searchlight had the money the last two years running though...I dont like the thought of losing the category when its just getting back on track...then again in a world of Lady GaGa's Im fearing the lost integrity of the nomination

I always thought the category was interesting but sometimes they don't nominate any good songs or forget to nominate the amazing songs. Last year is a prime example, how could you not nominate Bruce Springsteen?! His song "The Wrestler" was incredible, better than all that Jai-Ho garbage. Peter Gabriel's song was even better than slumdog's sh*t.

Joshua may have been mediocre in a lot of critic's minds (not mine) but Dave Matthews was robbed for 'The Fly'...I mean the whole movie the kid plays one or two piano keys each scene and the ending blows your mind when you realize those single key notes spread out during the course of the entire film was Joshua slowly and meticulously practicing the song. I thought it was brilliantly scary.

i lost all faith in this category anyway after Springsteen wasn't even nominated for The Wrestler
PrevalentMind writes:

They know that too- maybe they're getting rid of the category because they dont trust their own judgment anymore...thing about The Wrestler though is that the song only appears at the end credits- the best song category was dedicated mainly for musicals at the time of its creation, so they kind of snub any song that doesn't play a key role during the films dramatic scenes.

Oscars are a joke like our American political system, who takes them remotely serious or even relevant?

After Three 6 Mafia how is this a valid category anyway.
