"Hero" Director to Remake CoensSubmit Comment
THR is reporting that Zhang Yimou has started shooting a Chinese remake of the Coen brother's film "Blood Simple." The new movie is called "San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi," which roughly translates to "The Stunning Case of the Three Gun Shots."

The original film is about a Texas bar owner who hires a private detective to kill his wife and her lover. It is still unknown how different Zhang's version will be, but it will be released later this year.

Zhang previously directed "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers." He recently took a break to focus on the design of the opening and closing ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics.

Blood Simple is a great film and I have to admit this would be one of very few remakes I would be interested to see. Zhang Yimou really knows how to create visually breathtaking cinema in a completely different - although neither better nor worse - way than the Coen brothers.

Remake BAD films- leave the good ones alone

Blood Simple, though not my favorite Coen brothers film, is a very intense, interesting movie. And like SACHEM said, Zhang Yimou knows how to create good films with awesome cinematography so I would too be interesting in seeing this one.

Why?

Why? Because it's a great story that can be rewritten for a different culture. Americans remake all these great foreign films to transplant in hot dogs and texas accents but Asia cant remake an American film and adapt it to THEIR culture? Kinda assholish ain't it? Either way Bollywood remakes almost EVERY great film from other cultures...this is nothing new- we wont be exposed to it, we obviously wont be the targeted demographic, so what's it matter? Go ahead Zhang Yimou.

Wel if it was not for this they would of not met Jeffery Dowd. He was the basis for the Dude in the Lebowski. But some films should not be remade, especially anything by the coen brothers.

If they can remake a watered down Old Boy with Will Smith and a totally different ending- we can allow this. Zhang Yimou isnt exactly a Marcus Nispel he's a top filmmaker in the world- as well as his country. This is like Scorcese adapting and remaking "Infernal Affairs" for Americans.

Remember...it was called the Departed- took a bunch of Oscars...? No? Okay then...

@PM you've got a good point

Great. Will this guy include a sendup for Mao in this film as well? If the Village Voice thinks you're films advocate statist fascism and autocracy, then you might have a problem. Remaking a Coen brothers film into something even loosely supporting China's ruling class, ravishing or not in style, isn't something I want to see.
lostwarrior writes:

@minkowski, give it a chance. I mean it might not be that bad. and if it is, at least we still have the original, besides that the only way we will see it mostly likely is via download or in the international part of a video store.

Don't have a problem with him remaking the film so much as his deliberate kissing up to the ruling class of China, and autocracy in general. If that's the case, I can go listen to Horst Wessel in the original German instead.
