Big Plans for "Scrubs" Renewal

Big Plans for "Scrubs" RenewalSubmit Comment
"Scrubs" may have been cancelled by NBC, but ABC will bring it back for a ninth season next Winter. And series creator Bill Lawrence is planning big changes by shifting the action from the hospital to the classroom and making med-school professors of John C. McGinley's Dr. Cox and Donald Faison's Turk.

"It's going to be a different show," Lawrence explained to Entertainment Weekly. "It'll still be life-and-death stakes, but if the show is just 'Scrubs' again in the hospital with a different person's voiceover, it would be a disaster and people would be mad."

The Sacred Heart hospital won't go away altogether, but it will no longer be the show's main location. And regarding Zack Braff (JD Dorian), Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa) and Ken Jenkins (Bob Kelso); they will be making guest appearances. Neil Flynn (The Janitor) will not be returning.

"Med students in their first three years have to spend anywhere from 10 to 50 percent of their time at a hospital," Lawrence explains. "And that's when you'll see some of the [original cast members]. Continuity-wise, Sacred Heart will still exist with those people still working there."

Lawrence added that half the cast will be comprised of freshmen, with one recognizable actor. "[ABC] is really after us to hire a big name," he reveals. "So one of them will be fairly famous."

that would be cool to see the original cast members at the hospital every few episodes.

To hell with jumping the shark, this will be jumping a whale that auditioned for Jaws by watching Shark Week.

Hang on, how would J.D. guest star when it goes to Sacred Heart if he moved hospitals?

if it has the original team behind it, it might be funny u know. Cox and turk are awesome. yeah jd is part of it. but im more pissed that the janitor is not going to be in it. but at least it has McGinley in it still

I agree, Scrubs is one of my favorite shows but I wish they would just let it go, the finale was good. JD is the heart and soul of the show and without him it's just a desperate spin-off.

Actually, the first two years of med school are spent almost entirely in the classroom learning basic science at 90%+ of schools (I should know, I start up my third year on Monday). The next two are spent in the hospital almost entirely. If they have first year med students working in the hospital I'm going to stab somebody. This will flop and be terrible.
