Sean Penn Backs Out of "Three Stooges"

Sean Penn Backs Out of "Three Stooges"Submit Comment
THR is reporting that Sean Penn is taking a break from Hollywood to focus on his family, and as a result, has backed out of "The Three Stooges."

Peter and Bobby Farrelly (Dumb & Dumber) have spent the better part of a decade trying to get "Stooges" off the ground, and in March they were able to cast Penn as Larry, with Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe.

Now MGM and the Farrellys, who wrote the script and are set to direct, need to decide whether they will wait for Penn or seek to find a new actor.

Time and availability are the issues: "Stooges" was eyeing a late August start date, and MGM has slotted it for a 2010 release. If the studio does wait, it could risk losing Carrey and del Toro. On the other hand, many actors are vying to replace Penn.

bummer, he was a good/odd choice for this role, but family does come first

Pretty hard for any movie to 'replace' Penn, I would think should he drop out of a movie.

Meh. IMO, they had a weak cast from the get-go. Sean Penn was really the only one I thought would be able to bring something to a comedical character (Benicio is amazing, i just dnt think this is his type of character, and Carrey is the same as always. He'll bring his funny but predictable humor to it...)

I'm glad I don't want to see him around anymore. He's had enough exposure
Ranger writes:

griffinkane - really? I didn't think he acted that much, but just chose really good projects and did them even better. Hollywood needs his talent amongst all the teenie-bopper crap out there.

good, sean penn is a liberal terrorist funding douche anyway

I could have seen him do it, but I know there has to be someone better.

no one can recreate what the stooges had. plus, jim carrey is funny, but is not like curly. i did like him as andy kaufman....
Ranger writes:

@The Worm - I don't even know why they did that Kaufman movie, other than Carrey did an amazing imitation of him (apparently that was enough of a reason). I was a fan of Taxi... but that was it for Kaufman oh, that and wrestling people on SNL). Not a notable person in history to get a movie.

Of course he refuses when he knows he can be upstaged by two other actors...Im certain he made up all that Iranian honour killing nonsense to f*ck over Harrison Ford in Crossing Over (Ford should of had a nomination). His reason for leaving that film was flimsy at best, especially once we saw the film and the scene was nothing more than a murder mystery subplot. Penn is a c*nt. A talented, self righteous, piece of sh*t c*nt.

[Penn is a c*nt. A talented, self righteous, piece of sh*t c*nt.] You just described Hollywood.

No...no I didn't...or we'd be seeing Abigail Breslin walking around Cannes with a stick in her ass, blowing smoke into the faces of everyone who didn't agree with her politics and bullsh*t statements.

yeah right. As soon as Penn is offered an oscar worthy scipt, he'll all of a sudden be acting again. WTF.
