"The Birds" Remake May Not HappenPosted: June 16th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Chud had the chance to speak to Dimension Films producer Brad Fuller about a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," which already has Naomi Watts signed on to star and George Clooney attached.
"We keep trying, but I don't know," said Fuller. "That's so hard to get the script right. We continue, and we struggle, and I just don't have a ton to say about it until we've got something good."
There are two problems that Fuller is dealing with. First, is that he's trying to remake the work of Hitchcock. "We lay ourselves out there and get annihilated out there online all day long and that movie just opens us up to a whole different level of annihilation," he explained.
The other problem is making a film about birds interesting. "What do they do? They peck and poke," said Fuller. "And poop. So there's not a lot of variety as to what can happen. You start with the sh*tting and you build up to pecking and then they poke."

^^ Isn't Disturbia exactly that?

No, Disturbia was saved, at least in the first two 'acts' by Morse's decent acting and Shia's personality. A light script didn't hurt. Disturbia is more inspired by RW and less a direct remake. BTW, the Disturbia blew all the goodness of the first two acts with a final act that was both underwhelming and preposteroous. By that time, I no longer cared. Can't stand Carrie Anne Moss either. The lady has a popsicle for a heart.

sinc the f*cking retard doesnt know what made the original interesting...im glad that they cannot remake it...the genius of hitchc*ck was that he was able to make even the most mundane...terrifying...and he didnt need cgi bs, just a ton of stuffed birds...and the story was character driven...hollywood is a vast wasteland

[The other problem is making a film about birds interesting. "What do they do? They peck and poke," said Fuller. "And poop. So there's not a lot of variety as to what can happen. You start with the sh*tting and you build up to pecking and then they poke."]
"So, we got to thinking," Fuller continued,"we'll make the birds have a mutation. You know, they were exposed to too much pollution and now they're carrying the Bird Flu. There's real potential there. Just imagine, a bird pecks you and ten seconds later, you drop dead of Bird Flu. Our CGI house is working on this big scene where the birds cause a building to implode. We're very pleased with these ideas."

PM, those crows you mentioned are quite intelligent:
"Recent experiments show that New Caledonian Crows are able to use one tool to affect another to achieve a task, at a level rivalling the best performances seen in primates.
The experiment was conducted by the Auckland team and involved putting food in a box out of reach of the crows. They were given a stick too short to reach the food, but they could use this to retrieve a longer stick from another box. The longer stick was then used to retrieve the food. This complex behaviour involved realising that a tool could be used on non-food objects, and suppressing the urge to go directly for the food. It was solved by six of seven birds on the first attempt, and had previously only been known in primates."
Now those would actually be cool to see.

Same with Ravens and Magpies (and Octopus too... but that's another post). Magpies can distinguish the difference between a person un-armed and one wielding a paintball gun - partially unseen behind a fence (before a shot is fired), the 'lookout' sends out the alarm... and they all take off.

They could have EASILY made this a great reimagining with some simple research. But as always the thing was planned by AMericans who couldnt come up with a better idea than: "What can do we do with Bird Flu? Nothing? Alright scrap it." They've probably moved on to a film about rabid pigs...geez how American's love to declare "PLAGUE" and "APOCALYPSE" at every turn. All they had to do was research birds. How hard is that if we can do it and have out imagination stirring?
