"Akira" Films are Dead

"Akira" Films are DeadSubmit Comment
Back in February of 2008, we learned that Warner Bros will turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel "Akira" into two live-action feature films, with Leonardo Dicaprio's company producing. The goal was to get the first installment into theaters by Summer of 2009.

"Akira" was set to be directed by Ruairi Robinson, who was nominated for a best animated short Oscar in 2001 for a sci-fi comedy called "Fifty Percent Grey." Unfortunately, Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Robinson has left the project and "Akira" is now officially dead.

"Akira" originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film. The story was set in a neon-lit futuristic post-nuclear war "New Tokyo" in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang's leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swath of destruction.

Wachowski's f*cked up after the first matrix. They don't need to touch anything ever again. I think that it is best that this live action version died. There is no way to take this story and make it as good as the original no matter what director/producer combo you use

No Wachowski brothers. They blew their only load with the first Matrix, and that film comprised all they had to offer, even though they stole most of the material. No one needs a Dragonball Evolution take on Akira. One day, a master filmmaker with the right sh*t will come along and turn anime into good live action films, but he or she hasn't arrived. Akira deserves better. Can you imagine Cowboy Bebop in the deformed hands of Ratner?
