"The Hangover" is Surprise Hit, "Land of the Lost" Bombs

"The Hangover" is Surprise Hit, "Land of the Lost" BombsSubmit Comment
Warner Bros' R-rated comedy "The Hangover" grossed an amazing $43 million in its debut, although Disney/Pixar holdover "Up" remained No 1 at the domestic box office at $44 million.

Weekend also brought the summer's first box office clunker, Universal's big-budget comedy "Land of the Lost." The Will Ferrell starrer grossed $19.5 million from 3,521 theaters, well below the $30 million the studio had hoped for.

Heading into the weekend, director Todd Phillips' "Hangover" was projected to open in the low to mid-$20s. Film's ability to roar past those projections and come close to beating "Up" underscores the healthy appetite for comedies.

Pic secured the third best opening ever for an R-rated comedy playing in 3,269 theaters.

Weekend's other new wide entry was "My Life in Ruins," which grossed $3.2 million from 1,164 locations to place only No. 9. Focus Features had much better luck with Sam Mendes' dramedy "Away We Go." Film grossed an estimated $143,260 from four theaters in New York and LA for a per location average of $35,815.

Not surprised at all considering how crappy the trailer for Land of the Lost looked. The Hangover was much funnier and smarter than I expected a movie like that to be.

Holy sh*t The Hangover made bank. That was such a great movie.

i wouldn't call 'land of the lost' a bomb...not that i have sympathy for this piece of crap but it did make 20 mil which means that it would probably cover it's expenses together with world wide gross.A bomb is more like pluto nash(4 mil weekend opening)

f*ckin loved The Hangover. Todd Phillips is underrated

borat...lol. To: lost_addict - Ferrel's fee is more than that... plus production costs. To: telur - I agree. But he has had some classic skits on SNL (Xmas Kangaroo with Jackman, Jeopardy and the Grateful Dead recording session), and I liked him best in his dramatic role in: 'Winter Passing' (2005) a $3.5 mil. movie that went on to make almost 29x's that at the box office (that's a great return percentage-wise).

ANYone here ever see 'MegaForce' (1982)?! It's so bad, it's almost good - but not (like Starship Troopers bad/good). MegaForce is like Delta Force that just ate a bowl of sh*t. They shouldn't remake that one... the should just re-lease it. Then... THEN we could bitch about a bad movie...lol.

@Ranger:and the Grateful Dead recording session) That was BOC actually. Blue Oyster Cult

The reasons why Hangover is a success is because they're well organized; the trailer, the balance comedy of three actor and most of all, the movie is raunchy comedy which never outgrew if you have a funny story along with right actors/director with it. Land of the Lost doesn't have those things. They except Will Ferrell's talent will carry the movie but he didn't.

no Danny McBride = Good film.

BlutoDaBoss21 - you're absolutely right (it didn't sound right in my head when I thought it was TGD). Thx.

"will ferrel is overated" You had to have meant Danny McBride, right?
mattcl23 writes:

Saw this one all the way. I would much rather see a R-rated comedy instead of a PG. The Hangover looked much better anyway.
bacci40 writes:

time for ferrel to take a long look at his career choices...here is a guy who can do great character pieces, but chooses to constantly play the man-child, much like sandler...and its played out...will gotta eat, but i hope he learned something from the "rape the boomers childhood" project of the month
Ranger writes:
on June 9th, 2009 at 11:31:19 AM

Really... is ANYone here surprised than Hangover is the hit and Land of the Lost (career choices for Ferrel - but again... it's probably all he's being offered) bombed?!

Studios need to realize that Will Ferrell does not garantee box office gold. Nowadays it's quite the opposite.
