Director Says "Godfather" Should Have Been One MoviePosted: June 4th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Movieline had a chance to speak to director Francis Ford Coppola about "The Godfather" trilogy, which Coppola says should not have been more than one film.
"I don't think Godfather ever should have had more than one movie. It was not a serial, it was a drama," he said. "The first movie wrapped up everything. To make more than one Godfather was just greed. Basically, making a movie costs so much money that they want it to be like Coca-Cola: you just make the same thing over and over again to make money, which is what they're doing now. But Godfather was not really a serial, you know? I mean, how would you spin off Hamlet?"
He continued: "Some things lend themselves to being serialized, but there's also a law of diminishing returns. I mean, even as demonstrated with Godfather, once it shows you its stuff and has all these things you've never seen before, then each time you make it again, it's gotta be less interesting."

I think he was more concerned about the third and final movie for Godfather. I mean it wasn't as good as the first two. Which is why I think he was kind of regretting that he made more than what he should've. Pushed his luck too far so to speak. Any of that make any sense?

I Like all Three Film's But Like A Lot Of Film's Are Good As One Movie Story Then They Make Sequel's, Prequel's, Spin-off's etc.

Godfather 2 was amazing. Brining in DeNiro and showing the birth of the Corleone family through a parallel story was great. Murphylaw 93, your a moron. Coppola's drunk.

These old directors loose their objectivity- they were better when they were young and hungry- now they're old and rich=loosing their talents

Even though 2 is regarded by most people as the best in the series? Okay then Coppola...Im pretty sure its clear that the third was THE MOST unnecessary sequel of all time.

PrevalentMind - no... the worst sequels of all time are RoboCop and StarShip Troopers (didn't even know ST HAD sequels 'til I was channel surfing one night and saw a bit of ST III - almost made me want to tie up my balls and strangle myself!). The first of either of those movies were bad enough to be good. The sequels... ugh!
