"Up" Dominates Box Office

"Up" Dominates Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Disney/Pixar's "Up" dominated the domestic weekend box office with an estimated $68 million at 3,766 location. It is the third biggest Pixar opening weekend after "The Incredibles" with $70.5 million and "Finding Nemo" with $70.3 million.

The studio reported that 31% of the audience consisted of kids aged 2 to 11 -- allaying concerns that a pic starring a grouchy old man would present difficulties attracting children.

The weekend's only other wide opener, Sam Raimi's horror film "Drag Me to Hell," brought in $16.6 million from 2,508 theaters, coming in third. That was below outside forecasts but in line with studio expectations. The movie should benefit in coming weeks from its positive reviews.

"Terminator Salvation" ended up falling 62% in its second week to $16.1 million from 3,602 theaters. The fourth installment in the franchise has now earned a total of $90.7 million domestically in 11 days.

"T4" may have seen some of its potential audience opt for "Star Trek," which remained a solid performer in its fourth week with $12.8 million from 3,507 locations. "Trek" brought in a total of $209.5 million, becoming the year's first title to cross the $200 million mark.

I still dont get why people think "Up" wouldnt attract children. Its PIXAR for the most part, and its not just about a grouchy old man! Russells a kid! Plus its an animated adventure story, not a live-action bore-fest just about an old man!...the only thing i understand is why kids wouldnt want a Carl 'action' figure hahah but if youre an avid fan, who cares??
