"Transformers 2" Sets a Record in Quality

"Transformers 2" Sets a Record in QualitySubmit Comment
Director Michael Bay revealed to LA Times that "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has set a record for the biggest film in history, in terms of computer memory.

The new movie is taking up 140 terabytes of disk space, while the first "Transformers" took up only 15 terabytes. Usually the file size of a movie depends on how much detail is in each frame, the smooth transition between the frames, and the quality of sound.

This comes as no surprise, since the people at Industrial Light & Magic previously revealed the challenge Bay threw at them. "Michael took the production value up many, many notches," said Industrial's Scott Farrar. "Just the backgrounds alone are huge."

Farrar added that the 60 robot characters that play in these backgrounds will now interact much more with that world. He highlights "the splashes and the hits and the fighting on dirt or moving, banging into trees. Things splinter and break, they spit, they outgas, they sweat, they snort."

I hope it's not like X-Men III with so many characters that they all blend into one-another and the story suffers.

That's not a record in quality but quantity. I'm sure the visuals will be quality but after 2+ hours tiring. At least they can jump right into things this time.

I don't have a great feeling about this movie, I can't see it being as good as the first. But have to wait and see.

I disagree. I think this will turn out just as good. At least I sure hope so. Regardless, all of the mentioned detail will look pretty wicked in IMAX

Not that this would ever happen but how funny would it be if this movie was a massive failure?

That's Michael Bays problem, he's good with action, but bad when it comes to developing the story. Unlike Christopher Nolans work when it came to the character Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, fantastic story telling for that character.

For want of a nail, the kingdom was lost. 140 tB of textures, rigs, lighting data and geometry. 160 kB for the Transformers script. Something about the pen being mightier than the sword comes to mind, but then again Bay has NEVER shown anyone anything other than that he's an exemplar for crude and crass American film making. He's the epitome of the rich, ugly American. It's all about visceral action. For Bay, people in films don't make things happen, or things don't happen so we can delve into the mind of the character, sh*t just explodes, over and over and over. You get get some glossy chase scene, and for the moment a person's primal need to witness compulsory violence is sated. Witnessing directors like Bay go mainstream in a boom is like watching the American mind implode in reverse evolution.

Oh, and hard drive space is not equivalent to RAM, not even with the usage of 'virtual memory'. 140 tB on DISK, not in RAM. Get the facts correct, WP.

How does 140 terabytes of disk space translate to 'quality' (other than a higher resolution for the 'frames' shot)? That figure has no relation to 'quality' - even when compared to what the first movie consumed. Ugh... this is reaching.
