First "Inglourious Basterds" Reviews

First "Inglourious Basterds" ReviewsSubmit Comment
It has finally happened, Quentin Tarantino's long-awaited "Inglourious Basterds" has premiered at the Cannes Film Festival today. Many critics jumped at the chance to see it and have already posted their reviews of the film, which is being called everything from brilliant to too talkative.

Variety: Inglourious Basterds is great fun to watch, but the movie isn't entirely engaging. And it is defiantly an art film, not a calculatedly mainstream entertainment.

The Hollywood Reporter: The film is by no means terrible -- its running time of two hours and 32 minutes races by -- but those things we think of as being Tarantino-esque, the long stretches of wickedly funny dialogue, the humor in the violence and outsized characters strutting across the screen, are largely missing.

IFC: The ratio of talk to action -- not gun fights or explosions, but just people doing stuff -- in "Inglourious Basterds" is, generously, nine to one. Again and again, characters sit down over drinks, and the stakes may be high, but the conversations are meandering and lengthy.

TotalFilm: This is Quentin's best film since Jackie Brown. It might even be his best film since Pulp Fiction.

BBC: It still can't touch Pulp Fiction, which won the Palme D'Or in 1994, but the reaction here at Cannes is that Quentin Tarantino has made a glorious, silly, blood-spattered return.

Empire: It's rather brilliant. Every bit as idiosyncratic as the spelling of its title, it's a wonderfully-acted movie that subverts expectation at every turn. And it may represent the most confident, audacious writing and directing of QT's career.

The Guardian: It isn't funny; it isn't exciting; it isn't a realistic war movie, yet neither is it an entertaining genre spoof or a clever counterfactual wartime yarn. It isn't emotionally involving or deliciously ironic or a brilliant tissue of trash-pop references.

Wow conny, do you feel if you post the same thing twice people will actually care about what you have to say? Anyway, it's a Tarantino film, I'll be seeing it. Some of these film 'critics' don't know squat.

So many people here acting like the dude is a God. He's not perfect. He gets by paying homage to other people and movies. The dude is a fanboy's dream, but as DEATH PROOF proved, he's far from perfect.

If you too want to write like tarantino and have people kiss your ass much as on this site... find your FAVORITE script... and COPY & PASTE the sections you like the best in MS Word, then piece all your FAVORITE scenes together and call it your own. Oh, and do tons and tons of coke and be a major self indulgent prick.

Thanks for the link TORGO. I'll see this in theaters and, if I KNOW It's gonna be great, it's because all his films have been it. Even DEATH PROOF, just a little bit long

Well...he did kind of rush to get this movie out. I think I'll probably feel like the Variety critic did after I see it. I'm up for some arsty flick though.

SO they all hate it for what its NOT? did the Ghost of Gene Siskel enter these people's bodies? Review WHATS THERE ON SCREEN without adding in his last films- he already made those, why does he have to remake all of them in a new storyline...Could be sh*t but Im just saying thats NOT how you review a film...."I hated Superman because it wasnt Batman....".........yeah....riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
