Tom Hiddleston is the Villain in "Thor"Submit Comment
Deadline Hollywood Daily recently revealed that Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek) is in final negotiations to star in Marvel's "Thor." Now, the site has learned that director Kenneth Branagh has already cast Loki, Thor's nemesis.

It was previously rumored that Josh Hartnett was in talks to take the role of the main villain, but Marvel has decided to give it to a lesser known actor Tom Hiddleston. While Hiddleston may not be too well known in America, he starred opposite Branagh in the BBC miniseries "Wallander." He was also one of the many actors considered for the Thor role.

Hiddleston is British, 28 years old and is over 6'1 tall.

what a no-name cast this is turning out to be; how is Marvel Studios expecting this to make money if Thor is less known than Iron Man, and Iron Man had well-known Oscar-nominated actors

^ - I agree with you partially. But those actors in Iron Man were RIGHT for those parts. Thor is a little tougher to cast with A list actors.

agreed. If done well.. they will be known afterwards.

I agree, Lesser known actors is a smart idea. Let's just hope they can fit the roles well enough and Kenneth Branagh doesn't tool around with the comic so much so that it's a completely different movie.

Bravo!

Off topic(ish): Clooney would have made a good Tony Stark as well (age, looks, classy-playboy - old Hollywood image, can do comedy when required).

Jesus that guy is ugly! Haha, I think Bran knows what he is doing. Lesser known actors= more $ for things like CGI. I think he will probably cast a "name" actor for Odin or Sif. I just want to know the Warriors Three casting! Skarsgard for Fandral!

Ranger, I think Clooney didn't take the role because he pretty much would have been playing himself. The guy is pretty much the real life version of Stark, haha.

This guy has mischievous eyes, and if Branagh picked him, he must have some chops.

acslaterson - good observation. I never thought of it that way, but yes... probably why George was always my first pick. Dolph was my pick for Thor... but I see Hollywood has overruled me (bastards)!

"what a no-name cast this is turning out to be; how is Marvel Studios expecting this to make money-?"....................Because maybe they're hoping great filmmakers know what they're doing because that is what produces great films...2 words: STAR TREK....Marvel is doing the right thing to build a film and not a poster rack at Zellers with 20 poses of Hugh Jackman or the Jonas Brother grabbin all gay on each other. To hell with big names.

'To hell with big names' - is exactly why Indie Films have done so well these past years. And I agree (especially with movies like Thor) - unknowns are the way to go. I want to watch Thor being Thor. Not 'that guy that was in that other movie!' I'm really looking forward to this one. This, and that other tough nut to crack of a movie... Captain America. 2 great origins/stories... 2 tough as hell movies to make (really well).

Hugh Jackman was pretty much an unknown when he was cast as Wolvie and every everyone moaned and bitched when Ledger (not an unknown, I realize) was cast as The joker...look how that turned out. I'm willing to reserve judgment for now.

Through the history of TV and movies people underestimate the Actor's ability to adapt to the character they're to play (the studio 'exec's' are the worst for this). They didn't want Christopher Reeve for Superman, Michael J. Fox in Family Ties, wanted Tom Selleck for Indiana Jones (although he would have done a good job as well), they didn't want Spock in Star Trek (imagine that one?!?!)... etc. etc. Everyone was on about Jackman being almost a foot taller than the Wolverine in the comics. People should open their minds. Change isn't always a bad thing. Hard to imagine now anyone else playing the characters I've listed above other than those that did it.

i3u7n5 - right on the money sir, this is shaping up to be a well casted film and for something as monumental in comics it really needs to be.
