Kevin Smith Going for an Academy Award

Kevin Smith Going for an Academy AwardSubmit Comment
MTV News spoke to director Kevin Smith, who is now very excited about his upcoming project, which is apparently based on a song by Warren Zevon called "Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)."

The song, Smith explained, "is about a goon, a hockey goon. It's this very wonderful, soaring, moving story that's also bittersweet and very, very funny, about a hockey player who just wants to play hockey, who loves hockey so much, but just sucks at it. The only thing he can do to be on a team is just be the enforcer, just be the guy who goes out there and beats the sh*t out of people."

The new movie will be set in the late 1970s within the World Hockey Association, before those teams were absorbed into the National Hockey League. "It takes place during the last gasp of the goon era of hockey when it was all about fighting," Smith said.

There will certainly be lots of humor in the script, but Smith envisions the film as being more dramatic in nature and possibly an Oscar-winner. "I never once thought about winning awards or anything, but that movie I think can do it," he said. "If I play my cards right and we get the right people in it, it could be an award-type movie."

Kevin Smith has more potential than a lot of the people that have actually won Academy Awards. Well, at least for writing he does. Chasing Amy was close to getting a nomination.

I was thinking this would happen. He's always liked hockey but it seems the past few weeks he's been obsessed with it; Especially Gretzky. Last week's Smodcast (or the week before?) I couldn't really listen to after the first ten minutes. Have no problem with hockey, just can't listen to an entire podcast on it. His twitter updates are all hockey-oriented too.

"It takes place during the last gasp of the goon era of hockey when it was all about fighting," Last year?

He won't- He's not- He'll never...Chasing Amy was the closest he could come, but the script was blacklisted because he just cant help having his childish sensibilities for farts and shock jokes. I can't see him reigning himself in for an Oscar nomination while he's around all the people who make him a child at heart...Oh and throw in his favourite sport...yeah im sure this will be Oscar material and not just him f*cking around like usual. This wont be your Oscar because you are NOT Darren Arnofsky (this idea is a blatant ripoff of the Wrestler's success with a bruised shell of a man injected into a different sport) Stop directing, grow the f*ck up, and write like the fantastic writer you are- BUT let someone else direct! His only chance at Oscar is for a screenplay...but he'll never get there as long as he's calling his own shots. NEVER.

To think of all the promise and the career he could have had if he just stopped the whole "King of Jersey" bullsh*t. He'd be right up there with David Koepp. But no- the best dialogue writer in the business kept his fat ass home doing entertaining nonsense. Sorry I love Smith but he's gotta grow up...Zack and Miri didnt prove anything to me except he can make a polished film without casting really bad actors from his community college.

kevin "mr. indie" "mr. anti-establishment" is now actually approaching a project to be developed with an oscar in mind. good move. all great movies have been created in exactly the same way. - what a d*ck.

He didn't say anything about an Oscar. He just said it could be award-type material. As in, not Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, just to give people an idea of what he has in mind.

Kevin Smith is a douche. Few of his movies have any merit. He shoots for a reaction, that is it. This time, he is shooting for an academy award reaction. A douche all the way.

f*ck Kevin Smith up his stupid ass. He's got a better chance of finding an Oscar in his stool than winning one.

you're all f*cking c*nts, he's comedic genius! hockey = best sport ever!

No he's a great writer...the Wayon's brother are more of a comedic genius than this guy! Smith just does really filthy, well written, babbling nonsense. when do you watch a Smith film and say: "Yeah my friends talk JUST like that while being able to inject philosophy with word by word scripture quotes."....Yeah humans are like that...oh wait- no they arent.
PrevalentMind writes:

INT. A hockey rink...two bruised up players approach center ice for the face off. GOON#1: So I was reading a passage from Archimedes the other day and it stated that a body immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. GOON#2 So how does that hold up? GOON#1 Ask your wife!.....Wheeeeeeeeee OSCAR!!!
