"Karate Kid" Remake Plot Details RevealedPosted: May 6th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
Moviehole is reporting that the new "Karate Kid" remake is still being called "Karate Kid," instead of the previously-rumored "Kung Fu Kid." The names have been changed as well; Jaden Smith is now Dre and Jackie Chan is Mr. Han. The film is said to be very close to the original, but with a spin of its own. The site got their hands on a detailed plot summary, which you can read below.
Plot: Sherry is offered a transfer to China. Considering the US office is about to lay off everyone, it's really her only choice; especially since nobody else at the office has been offered a transfer. With her young son Dre (Jaden Smith) in tow, the single-mother makes Beijing her new home. Needless to say, not knowing Chinese, and experiencing a bit of culture shock, they both find it a little hard to settle in - - Dre especially.
Like Daniel Larusso in the original film, Dre (who, unlike Larusso, is a skateboarding video-game buff) immediately catches the attention of the local bullies - in particular, Lui Wei Cheng. And before too long, Dre is going home with bruises (he tries to hide a black-eye under a cap by pulling it as far down his face as he can) and whining about wanting to return to the states.
Dre's enrolled into a strict Beijing Middle School. His first day there is a bit of a shambles - the assistant principal spots his bruises, and assumes he's been fighting (which, of course, they don't accept under any circumstances), and he turns up in a school uniform, something he didn't have to wear that day (there's only certain days when a uniform is required).
The Mr Myiagi character is actually named Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). He's the maintenance man of the apartment lock that Sherry and Dre have moved into, and meets the new residents when he's called over to fix their hot water service. From the bathroom, Han spots Dre practicing martial-arts kicks (unsuccessfully) in front of a video-game, and catches his black eye. Later, of course, he'll agree to teach him - both martial-arts and the Chinese language (so he can impress his mother by haggling over apples).
The 'John Kreese' character - the character played by Martin Kove in the original film - is Li Quan Ha, the owner of the Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu. One visit to the school - in which Li Quan terrorizes his students (who range from the age of 3 onwards), namely Lui Wei Cheng - and Dre is immediately put off.

WHY!!!! It should just be the kung fu kid and be a completely new film, not a remake. I mean they haven't even kept the names! The only time I would watch this is if it was on telly probably, and even then I'd wait till it was on terrestrial channels

i don't care what they do any longer...i got so fed up seeing remake after remake...i'm just not gonna watch the ones that aren't worth it....as for jaden smith, the only thing i'll say is that he's not gonna be young much longer, and when he starts doing big movies...people will not credit him like they credit his dad

Amen to the "no more remakes" comment! With the exception of Halloween most remakes suck! For f**k sake please come up with something original.

simple fact is yes, there are original people out there....but sadly these days....there's way too many people with remakes and sequels and prequels on their minds.....people like christopher nolan (i'm just using him as an example)....he wouldn't do a remake that wasn't fitting....batman needed to be remade...titles like the karate kid don't need it....it's why i have no problem saying 'neverending story' doesn't need to be remade....it was great back then and it still is great today....i watched it a lot with my niece....and she got a kick out of it the same way with 'the goonies'....those kinds of titles just don't need to be remade as the originals still appeal to new crowds...but that's ok....only sane people wouldn't pay to watch remakes like that....it's also why i have no problem saying a 5 year old has more imagination than hollywood does, well at least the hollywood we know of today
