"Wolverine" Box Office Results are In!

Wolverine Box Office Results are In!Submit Comment
20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" grossed $87 million from 4,099 theaters at the domestic box office and another $73 million from foreign markets. That's the second-best opening of the four "X-Men" movies after "X-Men:The Last Stand," which had the advantage in opening over Memorial Day in 2003. "Last Stand" grossed more than $102 million for the four-day holiday weekend.

"Wolverine's" impressive bow came despite a working copy of the movie being pirated a month before the film's opening. Studio isn't sure how much the piracy ate into the box office, but some insiders suggest it could be as much as $20 million.

Warner Bros. and New Line's "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," offering an alternative for women, opened to $15.3 million from 3,175 location to land at No. 2 after "Wolverine."

"Ghosts" performed in line with last year's "Made of Honor," which opened to $14.8 million on the same weekend a year ago. That's also the same weekend that "Iron Man" opened to $102 million.

acslaterson, I agree. It doesn't deserve so much money. Word of mouth will spread that this movie sucks.

the last stand opened in 2006. X2 opened in 2003. so which had the higher opening?

good results despite the fact that there waas a leak and it lost alot of money b.c. swine flu closed all of the theaters in Mexico
acslaterson writes:

The sequel will be better just because they won't have to focus on cameos. Mariko, Silver Samurai, and maybe Sunfire. That's it. Develop the characters, make up some shit about a ceremonial costume and make a Kill Bill style movie with Wolvie in the orange and black costume!
Ranger writes:

Again... that 'leak' was no such thing. Just smooth marketing. It enticed those that may not have otherwise gone to see it. And projecting how much that 'leak' caused to actually put a $ value to it...ugh! OK...it cost them: 5 bucks... no, $83 million...oi! It didn't hurt them one bit.

little wannabe fans think this is a good movie. grow up people and realize this movie sucked horribly. no more xmen movies for me.
Milwaukee Marvel writes:

X3 had the highest opening
bacci40 writes:
on May 3rd, 2009 at 11:23:45 PM

surprise...pirating does not hurt the movie biz...it does however hurt the after market biz...saying that, wolvie is an abomination, and all this does is cement the attitude in fox suits that they can put any piece of shit out there, and people will pay to see it
PrevalentMind writes:
on May 3rd, 2009 at 11:26:32 PM

Star Trek is going to murder this flick in the first degree next week...So Wolvie ya' had as much fun as you could, while you could...
synthetic1985 writes:
on May 3rd, 2009 at 11:29:15 PM

yea that's not fair at all...at this rate....people my age will be old farts by the time they are ready to reboot the x-men franchise and stay true to the comics
PrevalentMind writes:
on May 3rd, 2009 at 11:37:34 PM

By then comic writers will have fucked up the X Men origins anyways...ppl can complain all they want about Hollywood remaking or reimagining things- but comics are just as guilty...
acslaterson writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 12:13:05 AM

^^^Loeb and Thor anyone?
Ranger writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 12:24:12 AM

2 PrevalentMind - you're right (your last 2 posts) - comics have backtracked more-so than anyone. And Wolverine won't survive the Photon Torpedo enema coming soon to a theater near... well, we all know the rest.
jjjjjoey writes:

Who cares about staying true to the comics? There's more people who've had sex and enjoyed xmen orgins than people who whine about no Deadpool or Gambit screen time. It was a good movie for what it is...although the effects sorta sucked at times. I'm looking forward to another...which I'm sure everyone who cries about this will see as well. Star Trek looks good...never been into it, or seen any other movies though...I don't know if it will make more money than x men in its opening week, but I still hope it does well.
synthetic1985 writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 2:08:28 AM

jjjjjoey....whatever dude...i'm just sayin lots of fans care...even ones who have had sex, they probably just don't care to complain...with everything as bad as it is today why wouldn't they stay true?....it would be something relevantly new, cuz now and lately all they have been doing is fucking it up...wouldn't you watch apocalypse if they used movie effects on him?...even if they did fuck it up?....at least it would be better than seeing all this origin crap...i know comics were cheesy in the first place but goddamn!...they could have done so much better and they knew it but chose not to...that's how i see it...i don't care if it's complaining, it also isn't fair...haha 'it's not about what i want, it's about what's faiiiirrrr!!!!' lol
Jeds writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 3:15:30 AM

True to comics... not true to comics... I don't care as long as they make a good movie, which this is not. It's average. They had a chance to make an amazing origin story and blew it.
bacci40 writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 3:40:15 AM

jjjjjoey, care to explain what made it a good movie? couldnt be the story, that sucked....couldnt be the acting, which except for schreiber and huston also sucked...couldnt be that the movie stayed consistent with the first 2 xmen movies (i dont count 3, cuz that sucked)....couldnt be the cgi, which wasnt great...couldnt be the action, which was rendundant...so what was it? oh maybe it was the scene where the weapon x team takes down the africans and stryker calls them out one at a time to showcase their talents....ya, that had to be it
bacci40 writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 3:45:07 AM

in regards to comics effing themselves up...yes they have...but in those cases we are talking within a matter of years, not issues...comics that eff up their continuity issue to issue...dont last...the movie xmen continuity was set in the first two movies...in this continuity, wolverine before the adamantium bonding was not a good guy...he didnt volunteer for the experiment and it was the bonding and the trauma of the bonding that caused his amnesia...and please, if a comic used the "adamantium bullet" thing, that writer would be laughed out of the biz
synthetic1985 writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 4:19:41 AM

bacci40 is right....this is another thing i don't understand....stryker is now convinced to 'walk until his feet bleed'...how the hell can he exist in X2 as well as have the same mind set?....i don't get 20th century fox sometimes....well, that's a lot of sometimes lol
synthetic1985 writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 4:24:28 AM

this has nothing to do with it....i'm sorry lol...but did anybody here think that 'doom' followed the first game at all?...the fact that the evil creatures were demons in all kinds of forms and not chromosome 24 people?...they didn't even show those weird ball shaped creatures that float in the air and shoot blue orbs or something at you...weak
jjjjjoey writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 4:47:29 AM

Hmmm....I enjoyed the movie because the story was exciting. The action, actors...everything else was good enough to leave me feeling fulfilled. I'm not going to dissect because you thought the story sucked. The acting sucked. The cgi sucked. And I'm not going to tell you to take it for what it is since you are obviously a more devoted fan than I. But dude, its ok if the movie wasn't 4 hours long, or if it didn't show/explore your favorite character for 50 mins. You could've always asked for your money back when it ended. And you can always boycott the next one when it comes out. But didn't and you wont.
jjjjjoey writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 4:51:12 AM

Lol...they didn't even show the robot spider too, huh?
synthetic1985 writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 4:58:29 AM

i know someone who works at the theater...didn't have to pay...so yea i'm still complaining lol....it's ok, some other movie company will make a better one in good time...to be honest it didn't have to be 3 hours....and still could have done better
Ranger writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 1:07:37 PM

I owe you one. You just telling me it was 3 hours (along with these lukewarm reviews at best), just saved me the trip to the theater.
synthetic1985 writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 3:13:24 PM

well i meant in general they could make a successful apocalypse movie under 3 hours...and still do a better job than all previous x-men movies
Kid_A writes:
on May 4th, 2009 at 4:26:47 PM

Wow God! 87 million dollars! 20th Century Fox did a great job with the earlier release/leak of the movie and all that speculations... Have they ever worried about the movie wouldn't make a great opening? :D
the_tortel writes:
on May 5th, 2009 at 12:05:46 AM

the movie's good, I'd see it again in theaters for a chance to see a different end-creds scene
Eben1277 writes:
on May 5th, 2009 at 4:58:22 AM

Come on, comic writers have come up with much more rediculous shit than an Adamantium Bullet. Which actualy makes more sense than most of the other reasons given for his memory loss given his healing factor.
