Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" Being Re-Written

Posted: April 29th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Ridley ScottSubmit Comment
Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" has already gone through many changes. It was first announced that Russell Crowe would play the Sheriff of Nottingham, who would be a noble lawman than an evil king's right-hand man and face off with a more shadier Robin Hood.

Then Scott revealed that Crowe would play both the Sheriff and Robin Hood. That idea was later scrapped as well, leaving Crowe only to play Robin Hood with Matthew Macfayden (Death at a Funeral) cast as the Sheriff.

The film is currently shooting, but Showbiz411 is reporting that the screenplay will now be reworked top to bottom. The first script was written by "Kung Fu Panda" scribes Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris. It was later re-written by Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, LA Confidential) and the new writer coming in to take over is Tom Stoppard (Brazil, Empire of the Sun, Shakespeare in Love).

These requent rewrites usually spell doom for a film, but if anyone can save it, it's Stoppard.

I dont see why they need to if its filming already... but whatever the case it's still gonna be great!

WHY?!? Oh man...the idea of a shady Robin Hood going up against a law abiding Sheriff sounded sooooo interesting. A possibly great examination concept on how criminals can upgrade themselves from thugs to legends.

It's gonna be scrap, like everything Scott has done since Blade Runner (except Gladiator...)

Isn't it a bit late to be re-writing when they have already started shooting? Then again, the same happenEd on GLADIATOR.

Hah! I just commented last week in the story about them hiring a sheriff that it seemed the movie didn't even have a script. Apparently I was right. This is going to be a mess.

Perhaps they should do a prequel set 30 years before Men In Tights. It will reveolve around the Sheriffs decent to the dark side.Yeah, that'll work!

It's not a good sign of the quality of a certain film, when right in the middle of its shooting, it needs a full rewrite starting from scratch. But, I've been amazed time and time again by so many of his films, that I'm willing to give Ridley Scott the benefit of the doubt. By the way, I definitely have to agree with the general consensus here about the previous plot ideas for this film in its early stages. This Robin Hodd tale has been done before, quite successfully might I add, in the past; there was no need to do another film, especially when the memories of Kevin Costner's flawed-but-still-quite-enjoyable version are still fresh. Now, the thought of making the Sheriff of Nottingham the good guy, played by Crowe, was, if not genius, at least a brilliant idea, and a fresh approach to a material known to many worldwide and constantly repeated over the years. Crowe is more suited to that type of role: the kind, not-really-old, but mature, wise leader with a solid moral foundation who commands with certainty and confidence and makes others follow him. The Robin Hood role could have been a little more of a scoundrel, a rebellious, youthful character full of energy, more suited to another actor, maybe somebody like (i'm just going to throw an example, no need to attack me or criticize my choice in a bad manner)James McAvoy.
