Lawyer Uses "Crash" Defense in Murder TrialPosted: April 28th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
LA Times is reporting on a case in which a Swedish musician David Jassy attacked and killed a man who touched his rented car by first beating him and then running over him with his vehicle.
It all started when Jassy left a nightclub after an argument with his girlfriend. While driving, he pulled to a four-way stop, but rolled so far into the crosswalk that his SUV almost struck a pedestrian John Osnes. Osnes reacted by bringing his hands down on the hood of the SUV and shouting something.
Jassy immediately got out of the vehicle and punched Osnes. The blow knocked the man off balance and as he stooped -- either to regain his footing or to pick up his glasses -- Jassy kicked him in the face. "Like somebody punting a football," a witness testified. "He stepped into it."
A police officer ran toward Jassy, who was getting back into his SUV, grabbed at the passenger door and slammed his badge against the window, shouting, "Police officer! Stop!" Jassy looked at him, then put the vehicle into drive and turned its wheels in the direction of Osnes' body. The officer was still holding on to the door when the SUV rolled over Osnes. Immediately after, Jassy accelerated down the street and through a red light.
Now, according to court papers, Jassy's lawyer said that Osnes' death fit the thesis of the Oscar-winning film "Crash" -- "that random interactions of diverse people in a city as frenetic as Los Angeles can lead to disastrous consequences." He said the case begged a series of "what ifs," starting with, "What would have happened if Mr. Jassy and Mr. Osnes had not arrived on the same corner at the same time?"
The prosecutor, Sarika Kapoor, shot back: "The only 'what if' we are left with is: What if the defendant valued human life?"
Osnes' sister, Kris, said that the "Crash" statement makes it seem that Jassy was "a victim of circumstance" and that "the devil, the city of Los Angeles, made him do it." And while "actors get up and walk away after the cameras quit rolling," she said, her brother "never got up and walked away."

LoL. I agree that lawyer is terrible. "The devil, the city of L.A. made him do it." Who the hell is THIS guy kidding? Put Jassy in prison, the chair, or both and get it over with. What a dumb sh*t.

Dude, that guy's lawyer sucks.
Sounds like he unwisely used it as a throw away line in his conclusion and the prosecution took and ran with it.

Wow the cop should have shot his punk ass. I can see someone getting into a fist fight but to run the guy over? This sc*mbag should be injected to death for not giving a f*ck about someone else's life.

Geez, even a high school student could've been smart enough not to "beg the question"...or had more intelligence than to draw comparisons to one of the most grossly overrated films in recent memory.
Whoever guessed the lawyer was Lionel Hutz (God, I miss Phil Hartman) was spot-on.
