No More "Pink Panther" Movies

No More "Pink Panther" MoviesSubmit Comment
Director Shawn Levy revealed to MTV News that there will likely not be any more "Pink Panther" installments because of the sequel's poor box office results.

"I think we've likely seen the end of this iteration of the 'Pink Panther' films," he said. "Obviously, the sequel did not strike the chord that the first movie did."

The first "Pink Panther" film grossed $82 million domestically, barely earning back its $80 million budget. The sequel took in only $36 million, and both movies were panned by critics.

"There are theories as to why this one wasn't a hit," Levy continued. "Sometimes, that's just how the cards fall."

For some reason Levy can't pinpoint the problem with the franchise. Can anyone help him understand why it failed?

It's the same reason the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie flopped. It's a nostalgic piece aimed for a younger audience. The generational gap is to big. Kids don't follow the Pink Panther or Rocky and Bullwinkle the way kids from 20 years ago did. So aiming a movie for kids when they don't relate to the characters isn't going to work. If anything it should have been a throw back piece that adults could enjoy.

Maybe the movie just sucked and didn't appeal to anyone, new or old. Perhaps the first time people thought "hey, this can be good", went out, were disappointed and said "f*ck the 2nd one". C'mon, it made 82 million, but only to 2 mill was pocketed. I can't see the reason to make a 2nd one if the first barely succeeded financially.

no mysteri why the movies bommed. Steve Martin! No offence to the guy, I actually like him, but not as the famous Inspector. The movies alsow became to mainstreem, and lacked the playfull crazy feeling the orginal movies had. They americanised the franchise, and they showed the world again, how some masterpieses should be left alone. Or at least handeled with respect.

@WV, kids didn't follow the original Pink Panther movies either. The cartoon Panther appeared in the opening credits. Later, the PP got his own cartoon. My theory is that no one else is Peter Sellers.

@Kal-El. I see your point, But only the first two are really for adults. The sequels that followed were cheesy and horrible because they got too slapstick, and had a larger appeal to a younger audience. And If the original ones weren't marketed towards kids then why try marketing the remakes as such? It's just a stupid idea.
