Director Chooses "Bioshock" Over "Pirates of the Carribean 4"

Director Chooses "Bioshock" Over "Pirates of the Carribean 4"Submit Comment
After spending the better part of the last six years directing the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, which grossed $2.6 billion worldwide, director Gore Verbinski has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he will not helm a fourth installment that will see Johnny Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

"I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team," Verbinski said. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

The new movie is in development but not yet greenlit. It's unknown how Verbinski's decision will affect the pic's schedule.

Verbinski will instead focus on other projects that include "Bioshock," a Universal Pictures adaptation of the bestselling video game that has a John Logan script and is likely to be Verbinski's next film as a director. The picture is expected to begin production in 2010.

I was just f*cking talking about this. At least he's a decent director.

Hahaha, we were just talking about this on another story! Cool that they are making headway.

...holy sh*t. John Logan's no slouch either. I want to get excited, but...

Maybe WP is just blue-balling us for sh*ts and giggles. Nope. IMDB confirms it. Wow.

It's on Variety as well.

BIOSHOCK NEEDS TO BE ADAPTED MORESO THAN ANOTHER PIRATES MOVIE!
Dr.G writes:

ya but again with the"videogames turned movies" usually suck
jaksyn writes:

NOT ALWAYS, LOOK AT SILENT HILL, AND SUPER MRIO BROTHERS, GOTTA LOVE THAT ONE LOL
jaksyn writes:

OH AND MORTAL KOMBAT WAS GOOD, NOT THE SECOND THOUGH
synthetic1985 writes:

jaksyn i agree....after all...it sucked in the 2nd one that 'smoke' couldn't be human instead of robot....would've been more sick to see sektor instead of robot smoke...and human smoke could've fought sektor....that would've been nice
synthetic1985 writes:

granted super mario bros wasn't THAT great...but at least on the realistic side of things it can still be fixed....just show the ending clip as the opening clip for a sequel and convert to cgi...so all the old actors can at least voice their roles and koopa could be called bowser now...and look like bowser as well
Donald Kaufman writes:

I'm going with Dr. G on this one. Everyone keeps naming the same video games turned movies and, I make no apologies, but all those listed really blow ass. For more on this, refer to an earlier post about the Colossus movie, you'll see that that this territory has already been tread pretty thing. Recycled titles of throw away pieces of adapted crap.
synthetic1985 writes:

i agree...i didn't say super mario bros was good, everyone knows that, mortal kombat 1 on the other hand...hmm i can't say that was crap, it satisfied all expectations for me as a child and still does today...plus it had characters from other games too, all in the first movie...f*ckin sweet...but that's probably the best video game adapted movie out there...well, to me anyway
thomas deadison writes:

All these titles you guys are throwing around are absolutely terrible. I know it's subjective and all, but there has never been a good video game movie. EVER. Can anyone name one that was at least well received, critically? I can't think of any.
synthetic1985 writes:

i can't either....video game movies are never critically acclaimed anyway...but i still like mortal kombat 1 the best as far as video game based movies go

I just now saw the Shadow of the Colossus article and Donald pretty much said what I said on here...

i think if they sitck to the ideas of bioshock then they could be onto something. i loved that game to be honest, i just don't want to see it turn into another Doom

Good for him. Weather Man is a great movie, this guy has Oscar-winning potential.

Hey, he made a cool movie out of a ride, so my money says he can at least do a decent movie out of a game with some narrative.

You know what, I was with everyone about video game adaptations normally being sub par until someone here pointed out the obvious...Gore Verbinski made a movie out of a theme park ride. Now, the sequels were kind of a bogged down and over burdened mess, but the first film was such an out of nowhere surprise that I think we can all get on board with the idea that this will be worth at the VERY least checking out.
