"Return of the Jedi" Never Made a Profit?

"Return of the Jedi" Never Made a Profit?Submit Comment
David Prowse, best known for playing Darth Vader in the "Star Wars" film, told Equity magazine that he is entitled to a small percentage of box office receipts for two of the three original films - "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."

But he has yet to receive any residual payments for "Return of the Jedi," because producers told him that it has not made a profit. "I get these occasional letters from Lucasfilm saying that 'we regret to inform you that as Return of the Jedi has never gone into profit, we've got nothing to send you'." said Prowse. "Now here we're talking about one of the biggest releases of all time."

In real terms, "Return of the Jedi" is the fifth highest grossing film so far made. It made $572 million in theaters worldwide, including an estimated $88 million when it was re-released as a "special edition" in 1997.

I remember my actor friend telling me about this, he said that all of the main cast got screwed on residuals, including Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford.

I guess it took 650 million dollars to make...I'd be punching somebody in the face...

hmm...this is why if i'm ever a director...i'd make sure everyone is satisfied and happy...if not...the movie gets terminated...don't want people working on a film that they're not passionate about

Are they SEROUS??? I hope they try to take that argument to court lol.
producers: Your honor we refuse to pay any money's owed to Mr. Prowse because due to the low box office results and DVD sales we were unable to make a profit on Return of the Jedi and in our contract with him we shouldn't have to pay anything *smiles*...

Judge: Mr. David Prowse please step up.....

Judee: Now Mr. Prowse you have with you doc*ments showing the estimated amount the film has made to this date and all cost to make said film?....

David Prowse: Yes your honor.....*gives dockument*

Judge:.....

Judge to producers: Can you explain to me how you cant pay Mr. Prowse when the movie has made over $600 million dollars?

producer #1: IT WAS HIS IDEA!! *other producer looks over in shock* I WANTED TO PAY HIM BUT DAVE JUST HAS TO SPEND IT ALL ON DRUGS!!

Dave other producer: SHUT YOUR MOUTH!! I.....I. . .I'm going to jail aren't I....

Judge: can you explain it?

Dave:......no?

Judge:Mr. Prowse will have them send your check in the mail Case closed lock'em up!

producer: NOOOO NOOOOOO!! I DONT WANT IT IN THE ASS!! *yelling in the background NOOOooooo!!*

$600 million? Please. This flick has easily passed $900 million and then some with all the VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD releases over the years. My guess is there's some sort of loophole that allows the producers the option not to pay residual's to any actor until the film surpasses a certain % of profit, because this flick has definitely made $ and plenty of it.

WOW lawsuit to the max. Lucas' is f*cked up in so many ways but this takes the cake. I don't know but no one can be dumb enough to take their world on this obvious lie. Everyone involved should get a cut f*ck it.

I own a couple of Corporations. It's pretty easy (and legal) to show a Corporation that is making a profit show losses on the balance sheets. ANYone running a private corp (sans Shareholders) would do the same. I'm not saying it's right... I'm just saying it's the way to go.
