Magnolia Complains About Reaction to "Let the Right One In" Subtitles

Magnolia Complains About Reaction to "Let the Right One In" SubtitlesSubmit Comment
IconsOfFright was the website that first spotted that Magnolia Pictures changed the subtitles on the "Let the Right One In" DVD, taking out lots of the darkness of the theatrical version. Now, the site was able to get their hands on an email being passed around, where the studio comments on the situation.

Read the comments below and pay attention to how Magnolia talks about their customers and what it will do to make things right.

"Yes the bloggers are having a field day on this one. Normally they like to pick on the English Dub tracks, but in this case it's the subtitles. Obviously online tend to get rowdy and bandwagon mentality without knowing all the details. The current subtitle track is not altering the context of the film at all, in fact it's a more literal translation than any prior version of subtitles. It's not a defective or faulty subtitle file. Just more literal and larger in size for the small screen.

Both English and Spanish subtitle files were produced for this dvd release. Frankly it's not all that uncommon to have the subs vary from prior releases, typically go unnoticed as subs are purely a translation of film dialogue. This wouldn't have been a blip had it not been for one particular horror blog doing a side by side and claiming that they are wrong. They are not. We are not doing a recall or anything of that nature, again, these are not defective. Title came out two weeks ago and general public don't notice and don't care bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on. We have decided that based on the feedback that we will be making a running change, so that going forward (once inventories deplete), we will be making that subtitle version available. Options in set up will be; English Subtitles / English (theatrical) Subtitles / Spanish Subtitles.

Once inventories deplete? This means we have to buy the crappy versions anyway.

Magnolia; beware the movie bloggers' karma effect. Just go ask FOX. Although I don't think Magnolia would put out anything worth watching anytime soon. I wouldn't have even sniffed at LTROI had it not been for a friend who saw it on some top ten list.

A more literal translation? I'd love for someone who actually speaks Swedish to comment on that. I think if that were true they'd be saying it publically in response to this and not through leaked internal emails.

This has really pissed me of ! Looking at those screen grabs from Icons of Fright and the comparisons, the smallest of things in the theatrical make situations more noticeable and the film takes on more of a 'O my God' reaction from anybody viewing. I could tell you now that one character in the story never even comes to light. But in the theatrical version you know who the 'man' is early on and his relationship with the girl. One thing that gets me is why they did this -'because they are lazy'.

It's hilarious to watch these studio execs ripping on bloggers and websites. They think that they are mocking them, but it's pretty transparent that they fear them. If bloggers are pathetic losers that no one listens to, then why are you always talking about them?

I'm Swedish and don't know what the hell that guy at Magnolia talks about. I saw that example that was posted on WP a couple of weeks ago that showed the theatrical subs and the dvds and it's a huge difference. That guy actually does say "Come on! You can jerk off at home" and they translate that to "Let's go". Sure the core message of the line is the same but not nearly they right translation :P And the statement: "it's a more literal translation" is pure bs.

The "helper" is in the shower about to put acid on his face. He says "Eli" (the name of vampire girl). Subtitles translation..."Im trapped". Theyre either lying or didnt do any research. I smell bullsomething.

bacci40...i agree...but at the same time u gotta admit...there have been some good movies still worth watching...just not as much as there is that most people think of as pathetic....they only go cuz there's obviously nothing better playing....it's and funny to think that studios still only believe that if a movie makes bank that everybody loves it....if they want justice done then they need to stop making movies just for money...and not just that, they need to stop with all the prequels and sequels and remakes...only on certain titles does it work...at the rate it's goin these days, it'll overrule the amount of original titles that there are by the end of 2015 probably ...f*ckin A mon!
