Is Hollywood Unfair to Actresses Over 35?

Is Hollywood Unfair to Actresses Over 35?Submit Comment
Last weekend, actress Hope Davis admitted that she was somewhat "peeved" when she was offered a role playing the mother of Johnny Depp's character, since she is nine months younger than him.

Now, The Guardian has put together a list of actresses who played mothers to actors about the same age as them. "It is all too easy for a female actor to find herself cast as the mother of someone who once played her boyfriend as soon as she blows out the candles on her 35th birthday cake," said the paper.

* Forrest Gump: Sally Field plays Tom Hank's mother (age difference: ten years)

* Hamlet: Glenn Close plays Mel Gibson's mother (age difference: nine years)

* Giant: Elizabeth Taylor plays Dennis Hopper's mother (age difference: four years)

* Alexander: Angelina Jolie plays Colin Farrell's mother (age difference: one year)

* Back to the Future: Lea Thompson plays Michael J. Fox's mother (age difference: zero years)

And Anne Bancroft, who played the ultimate older woman in "The Graduate," was only five years older than Dustin Hoffman.

I feel that these are unfair examples, since in both "Forrest Gump" and "Back to the Future" the female characters are shown at different ages and it is much easier for a younger woman to portray an older one rather than the other way around. Not to mention... in "Back to the Future," Michael J. Fox's father is played by Crispin Glover who is three years younger than Fox.

No one wants to see old chicks on screen; it's the audience's fault as well as the studio's

in the case of BTTF, they needed a actress that was young for that role...

Great logic there, McBob.

Bob McBob, you're as dumb as your name suggests.

BobMcBob...i have to disagree about nobody wanting to see old chicks....ellen dow happened to be quite hilarious in 'the wedding singer'...and she's not the only one....how about the grandma in 'happy gilmore'?...however you're right about hollywood being unfair...although, it's not just to women over 35 but to everyone...it is the audience's and studio's fault...but i'm ready to fix some of that...and obviously i won't be the only one...so far i've been doin a pretty good job...just need to finish that cd first...everyone will get something out of it...i can feel it...whether it's good or bad...i have this feeling that people will be talking about it

Just look at the recent stories with Uma Thurman and Cameron Diaz that have been posted. Both of them are getting up there and how many movies have they been in lately? Meanwhile actors like Brad Pitt and Clooney get to pick and choose their projects well into their 40s and 50s.

Also, in "The Graduate", Dustin Hoffman was 29, playing 21.

Probably the most bizarre age difference between an on-screen mother and child that I can think of is Drunken Master II. Anita Mui played Jackie Chan's mother even though she was nine years younger than him!

Jolie played his mother in scenes when he was a little boy, doesn't really count!

didn't they CGI some extra veins on Jolie in Alexander to make her look older, cheesy

It's a sad thing for women performers but the end of a career is 35 and the comeback comes at 60. Anything in between has no place on television. WE either want young vixens or seniors with dirty mouths- its just a sad cold fact. The in between is usually both unconvincing playing young and old. Sucks...but thats the way it is.

It has nothing to do with their actual age. If you have the look for the part, then they'll cast you for the role of a mother, if that's the case.

Jolie is not just an actress though. She's definitely following a path of superstardom like Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman where you're so established and widely known a film is made around you and for you to accommodate age. Actresses audition- superstars are begged.
