Why a Kurt Cobain Biopic is a Bad Idea

Why a Kurt Cobain Biopic is a Bad IdeaSubmit Comment
Universal Pictures has already hired David Benioff (Troy, Wolverine) to write a film based on the life of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who died of a self-inflicting gunshot wound in 1994. But according to Portfolio.com, the film could end up being a loss for Universal and anyone attached.

Three years ago, Courtney Love claimed to have just $4,000 in her bank account and even considered applying for food stamps. Instead, she cashed in on her rights to the song catalog of her deceased husband. The deal involved Love selling 50% of her interest in Cobain's music-publishing rights for $50 million.

Now, Primary Wave Music, which purchased the rights, is having trouble licensing the music for advertising, movies and video games. In fact, the rights have only earned the company around $2.4 million.

To give you an idea of how low that is, here are a few examples of how much other bands have brought in. The Jonas Brothers have sold about $1 million for 105 licenses in film and television shows in 2008 alone. Aerosmith gave permission to use 24 of their songs for the video game "Guitar Hero," earning them $5 million. The game took only one of Nirvana's tunes (Breed), which was worth only about $50,000.

So why are Nirvana songs not selling? Some believe that the sound and lyrics embody generational angst and are not exactly ready-made to sell pop-culture trinkets. "Nirvana was so revolutionary that it's very difficult to match different projects, and there are tons of iconic groups that allow their music to be utilized," explained Sony/ATV Music Publishing chairman and CEO Martin Bandier.

If Universal ever finishes the biopic, are you planning on seeing the film in theaters?

Here's another idea why it's a bad idea: he's lame.

That all sounds like a ton of bullsh*t from the studios. He's not pop-culture marketable? He was f*cking pop culture. It was called the 90's. As lame as they were, I'm sure millions of people are ready to have their nostalgia sold back to them for the price of a movie ticket.

how stupid is this ? if Nirvana`s brilliant songs are not suitable for dog food ads, why would it a be bad idea to make a film about him. it`s totally diffent ball game.

i wouldn't mind a biopic about him...i think their songs are more talented than a lot of mediocre artists today

dwightschrute hit it on the head, but even still they won't get into, what I believe to be the truth, that Tom Grant (Private Investigator hired by Love to find Kurt) came to the conclusion that Love & Michael Dewitt (the nanny who lived at the Cobain residence), were involved in a conspiracy that resulted in the murder of Kurt after Kurt planned to divorce her.
