"Witch Mountain" Beats "Watchmen" at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Disney's family adventure "Race to Witch Mountain" raced to the top of the box office chart, beating "Watchmen," which is in its second week.

Starring Dwayne Johnson and directed by Andy Fickman, "Witch Mountain" -- a remake of the classic franchise -- grossed $25 million from 3,187 theaters.

"Watchmen" dropped a hefty 67% from its opening weekend, grossing an estimated $18.1 million from 3,611 theaters for a 10-day total of $86 million. The film cost $150 million to make.

Rogue Pictures' horror remake "The Last House on the Left" came in on the lower end of expectations, grossing $14.7 million from 2,401 theaters.

Weekend's fourth new wide release was the raunchy comedy "Miss March," which only placed No. 10. Pic grossed an estimated $2.4 million from 1,742 theaters.

Weekend was down from the same time last year by more than 15%. It's the first weekend since late December that the domestic box office has been down. Leading the pack the same weekend a year ago was "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who," which debuted to $45 million.

Yeah, well I kinda expected this to happen. After all, it really isn't a movie that would bring in a large crowd. It really was mainly produced for fans of the book or comics in general. I hate to say it, but the only way it would have gotten more people to show up were if the direction of the movie were changed dramatically (more "kid-friendly") which would have sucked ass. It's a kick-ass movie for being so true to the comic and not letting censorship get in the way, but in the process hurt itself in not gaining enough interest of the general public.

Expected, but still disappointing. Watchmen will recoup overseas and on DVD, anyhow.

Good catch, Milwaukee. For a second I was wondering--Who'd pay for VD?

HA! I f*ckin knew all you fanboys packed the theaters tight the first week! Just like Star Wars episode 3. I hope this movie is a mediocre success at best.

All of you who hoped for Watchmen to fail - you are a bunch of goofs.

I have to agree with Postman. We should be encouraging films like Watchmen, not hoping they fail. Do you only want to see films like 'Witch Mountain' at the cinema?

im sorry but movies like TAKEN are the ones that need box office reconition. please give me more uplifting movies where healthy people clean up society and not later cry to sleep about it. out of all the comic book story lines to choose from, Watchmen should have been the exact movie to make in the year 2073 when remaking movies have been finally been outlawed and any attempt to re-boot a movie will be punishable through the soylent recylcing process

Taken was an awsome movie, you guys in AMerica took over a year to screen it, When it finally made it to the states we already had it out on DVD for 4 months!! And Watchmen does deserve recognition, but iam certin it will do huge in the DVD sales and gain a cult status

lol yea my bad, an taken was a good ass movie but so was watchmen, i dont see how ppl are hating on it like it was trash when it wasnt, there were some parts i would have been alright wit out seeing but the movie was good
