"Watchmen" is Already Breaking Records

"Watchmen" is Already Breaking RecordsSubmit Comment
At this point it is still unknown how much "Watchmen" will earn, but one thing is for sure, the 3,611 theaters that it will be playing in is the most ever for an R-rated film.

Further aiding the film is that the movie will play in an impressive 1,600 locations starting at midnight Thursday. That's substantially more than the 656 midnight shows that helped Zack Snyder's "300" bring in an incredible $28 million in only the first day of its $71 million opening weekend in March 2007.

The first-day haul for "300" was the second-highest ever for an R-rated pic, after the $42.5 million "The Matrix Reloaded" earned. The previous widest release for an R-rated pic was the 3,603-theater bow for "Reloaded."

Warners distribution president Dan Fellman said "Watchmen" wasn't a tough sell with theater owners. "The reaction at our exhibitor screenings was terrific, and after the success of '300,' there wasn't an exhibitor in the country who didn't want to play Zack Snyder's next movie," Fellman said.

The "Watchmen" playdates include 124 engagements in IMAX theaters.

"All will have midnight shows, and that's a function of demand," IMAX Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster said. "If there weren't midnight shows, there would be a riot. The demand is very, very strong."

IMAX's Web site crashed four times this week because of traffic surges by "Watchmen" fans looking for ticket information, Foster said.

Online ticketer Fandango said Wednesday that "Watchmen" purchases represented 90% of its advance ticket sales for this weekend. No other wide opener is set for the weekend.

Thats good news, i think maybe it will get soem media attention, all it takes is a couple of good reviews and for people to say its different and you need to see it. Hopefully it works out well

^Reviews are nothing these days. All people need to hear is it's dark and it's different. Plus, seeing articles like this will catch the attention of more viewers. Once it brings in a huge opening weekend more people start flooding in.

"If there weren't midnight shows, there would be a riot" it's a bit scary at how true that is. hahaha

you stupid people dont understand that dark knight is past and it was a pg 13 movie and this is r rated movie and it is break records for an r rated movie if it would be pg 13 it would have come close to dark knight but not break record but watchmen is different and expectation is different i hope it breaks matrix reloaded record. Those who dont like watchmen you people suck read the novel and then comment

News flash: Dark Knight is not the greatest movie ever made. Yea, its hard to believe, I know.

what dark knight record you people are saying it did half of the bussiness of titanic it made 1 billion can it break that record .It's opening weekend was 28 million and it went on to make 600 million alone at USA box office alone .So time next you stupid say anything about a movie think first because not every movie is dark knight or titanic .And dark knight made 158 million because of heath ledger died and he was a great actor if he would be alive the movie would have made same as the batman begins 300 or 500 million.SO many directors ran away from making watchmen and Zack Snyder made is big achievement .Let chris nolan make any R rated movie and see if it breaks any record because Zack Snyder 300 already did that in march and has achieved more sucess than chris nolan .And if chris nolan is not making batman 3 in 2010 then warner bros will allow Zack Snyder to make the dark knight returns of fran miller graphic novel then we will see who cries

Not that a movie needs to be rated r to be good, lately studios have ruined some really good movies to aquire that pg13 rateing, maybe this will show them you dont always have to do that in order to have a blockbuster
