Sean Penn Wants a Harvey Milk Day in California

Sean Penn Wants a Harvey Milk Day in CaliforniaSubmit Comment
On the heels of winning an Oscar for his role in "Milk," Sean Penn has joined a push to get the state of California to officially recognize Harvey Milk's birthday on May 22nd.

Penn has appeared at a news conference in San Francisco with state Senator Mark Leno, who's announcing plans to reintroduce a bill designating Milk's birthday a "day of significance" encouraging schools to conduct commemorative exercises on Milk's life and contributions.

"Given California's fiscal crisis, the bill was written to have no cost to the state, and state workers and school employees would not get the day off from work," Leno said.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the same bill last year, introduced by Leno as an Assembly member. The governor said at the time that Milk should be honored in San Francisco but not statewide.

I don't live in California and I'd have no problem if the people of that state decided to set aside a day for Harvey Milk but the last thing anyone needs is Penn rattling his sabre for it. The guy is an amazing actor but he's totally bought into his own hype which is apparently inflating his sense of self worth.

How freaking annoying. Just when you thought Penn was done with rattling on about crap no one really cares about. Great Penn, you made a movie about a gay guy and now want to exploit it to the fullest. Congrats, you have just reached *sshole status.

Does he want a Hugo Chavez day in Venezuela, too? Penn needs to just shut the f*ck up. A Milk day would be good, but just because he's running his big ass mouth won't make things happen any faster.

Because Sean Penn would give a sh*t about Harvey Milk if someboady else got the role. right.

I dont get y are you guys so hostile to the notion of Penn fighting 4 a harvey milk day.. he is a good actor with a voice that ppl would here.. y not use it 4 sumthing beneficial.. mayb getting this role opened his eyes to the necessity of a harvey milk day and 4 that he shud fight 4 1

No, BondMcClane, you got it all wrong. Penn is an *sshole. Where was the Harvey Milk day before the movie came out? Even though I could careless about what Milk did, why is Penn speaking up now? it's because he wants to profit anyway he can and milk the movie for all it's worth.
