Joss Whedon's "Cabin in the Woods" Details Revealed

Posted: February 28th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Joss WhedonSubmit Comment
Joss Whedon, the man behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly" and "Dollhouse," is working on a new horror movie called "Cabin in the Woods." He has been careful not to reveal much about the plot, but has said that "everyone will love it so much that there will be no more need for movies. That's how it's going to be a game-changer."

Whedon wrote the film with "Cloverfield" scribe Drew Goddard, who has described the project in the following way: "It's its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It's fresh and new."

So obviously this new movie will be the greatest thing on earth and will likely bring something new to the horror genre. Not quite. /Film got their hands on the script and posted the general concept for "Cabin in the Woods," which sounds like "Big Brother," "Rat Race" and every recent horror film in one.

The film revolves around five college-type characters who head to a cabin in the woods and are given clear and clever instructions by "white collar" characters. Once the "victims" arrive at the cabin, it becomes clear that the plan is to lure the kids there to have them break the given instructions so that they might then be "punished."

The "white collar" characters are god-like manipulators, shady business dealers, adults to be suspicious of, aloof yet blood hungry audience and cynical film makers all rolled into one.

The cabin is rigged with carefully selected props, gimmicks and cameras that allow the overseers to both spy on and interfere with the college kids. As things are warming up we are given the idea that there are many different ways in which it could go very wrong for the victims, and that employees of the mysterious organization behind this scheme have held a sweepstakes on just how it's going to pan out. The various possibilities are shown to include Vampires, Werewolves, Aliens, Clowns, Scarecrows, Zombies and an Angry Molesting Tree.

By the end, "Cabin in the Woods" goes through a whole gamut of horror cliches in a way not entirely dissimilar to the "Scary Movie" series, focusing on images and ideas you'll recognize from any number of recently popular or classic horror films.

isn't that "summary" kind of exactly what we're to expect from a film titled "Cabin in the woods?" horror films of all variety have exactly that in common, right? A cabin in the woods where it all goes to hell. With Whedon, we're just supposed to sit back, see how it pans out, and see if we like the twist or not. Top job, WP, for telling me absolutely nothing.

Boy people need to stop being d*ckheads to WP.

I honestly don't get the animosity, and that comment makes absolutely no sense. If you actually could gather all of those concepts and plot points from the title, you are a f*cking psychic. Hey hey, let's all jump on the "I'm a prick on the internet!" bandwagon. Anyway, as much as I like Joss Whedon, this doesn't particularly intrigue me. I do like his "no more need for movies" comment though. Pretty hilarious.

Sounds like it will try to be SAW meets Hostel in a cabin, and I bet it won't be as good as either.

Sounds campy but fun nonetheless.

Seriously WP person, Whedon is obviously joking when he says it will eliminate the need for movies. I actually think a movie that could in some fashion incorporate "Rat Race" with horror elements would be quite innovative.

Is Josh Whedon a hack? Discuss.

Whedon is my dude and all but he's seriously running out of free passes with me. Dollhouse is crap. And now this? Shame how someone who struck gold with Buffy, Angel, and Firefly has come up short ever since.

"everyone will love it so much that there will be no more need for movies. That's how it's going to be a game-changer." ---- to make a statment such as that and then read the rest of the plot summary sounds like he needs a f*cking reality check!

Can everyone please understand he was joking? Clearly we all know it wont end the need for movies. Come on, folks, lighten up. And Whedon, you almost ruined Runaways. But I like the rest of the stuff you did. Dollhouse is poop.
