Will Heath Ledger's "Doctor Parnassus" Get a US Release?

Will Heath LedgerSubmit Comment
Heath Ledger's last film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" has been having problems acquiring a US distributor, making many worry that American movie-goers will never get to see the film on the big screen.

"Parnassus" revolves around a traveling magician who gives customers more than they bargained for.

Production on this independently financed film was moving along until Ledger died early last year, causing everything to halt half-way through. Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp stepped in to help out, with director Terry Gilliam creating a way for the three actors to all play different parts of Ledger's role.

A number of US buyers during the summer and early fall were said to be interested in acquiring stateside rights, but word of a potential deal quickly quieted down. The reason is because many are worried that an experimental film like "Parnassus" will be difficult to market to audiences.

A US deal is expected shortly and the movie already has a deal to be released during the Summer in the UK. Still, the absence of a sale nearly six months after talks began speaks to the difficulty of selling indie films to the domestic market.

"This movie stars Heath Ledger in his final performance -- it will get a deal and come out in the US," said one indie film veteran. "But it's no accident that it's taking this long."

big screen or not...i read the plotline long before i ever saw a picture of this movie...and i say it'll be EXCELLENT!...and if it doesn't make it to the big screen...well that's ok...i'll pay 35 bucks for it on blu ray...it's worth it...lots of well known actors trying to make a great movie...enough said

Studio execs are cheap & clueless. The fact that Ledger passed away & just won an Oscar, a star like Depp is in it and easily brings along his big fan following to his projects & that Gilliam has his own fans means it will be seen. Now like any movie if it's good more people will go out in droves to see it. Case closed. Doesn't even hurt that Law and Farrell have their own little parties is an extra. Morons this execs & distributors are.

I dunno, it just seems like common sense to release it. Hollywood is more money hungry than cheap and clueless. They will release it in theaters.

They better put this sh*t out! I'm sure someone will but its just that its stupid to think they wouldnt and how many people they'd piss off and dissapoint in the long run. I know this will be an awesome film!
