DreamWorks May Be in Trouble

DreamWorks May Be in TroubleSubmit Comment
In a dramatic development that throws the future of DreamWorks into question, Universal Pictures said today that it no longer plans to distribute DreamWorks' movies.

Instead, DreamWorks heads Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider are in advanced talks with the Walt Disney Company about a distribution deal. While other studios like Fox have also been mentioned as possible DreamWorks suitors in the past, a potential Disney deal appeared to be the only one on the table at the moment.

Universal released a statement saying, "Universal Pictures has ended discussions with DreamWorks for a distribution agreement. Over the past several weeks DreamWorks has demanded material changes to previously agreed upon terms. It is clear that DreamWorks' needs and Universal's business interests are no longer in alignment. We wish them luck in their pursuit of funding and distribution of their future endeavors."

In October, after DreamWorks extricated itself from its deal with Paramount, company heads Spielberg and Stacey Snider turned to Universal, which agreed to a theatrical distribution deal encompassing as many as six releases a year over a seven-year period.

Now Disney, which has cut back on its own release slate to concentrate on Disney-branded family entertainment, would appear to be in a position to accommodate a half-dozen DreamWorks releases per year.

WP - how the f*ck is Dreamworks "in trouble"? Sounds like the have lots of options to me.

They are in trouble because they are slowly running out of options, if they don't sign a good deal with Disney, then Fox is their remaining option. Which is not an option at all. And don't forget that Spielberg is in charge of DreamWorks and he loves getting hefty paychecks, which is always a problem for studios.

alexgi - That may be one of the most naive things I've read on this site. Do you really think if the two remaining distributing giants fail to agree to Dreamworks terms they're (Dreamworks) going to fold? Really? Really?!? That is just plain f*cking silly my friend. If Spielberg and Co. don't get the chunk of pie they want, they will simply change their terms. They will get a deal.....somewhere. This is Hollywood. You really think they're going to let their buddy Spielberg go belly-up? This is a business of $ and friends. And he's got both in spades....oh, and talent....oh, and a name that sells, etc.

People stop being so stupid and STOP saying the F word. don't you people have any morals at all? and what is it with everyone bashing Fox? sure they release some stupid stuff but doesn't film distributor? please just stop.

KaloVisor - I hear what you're saying about the "F word" (I suppose). But saying we (or I) have no morals or I'm stupid because of it is highly misguided and erroneous of you.

they are much to valuable to be lost in any way, someone will get them and it'll all be okay. They make/put out a lot of good films so I'm sure it'll be saved.

I'm sorry I was not referring to everyone one here. just the ones who are so loosed tonged that they have to add hard language in commit they say on here. I like dreamworks btw and hope everything works out for them.
