Mickey Rourke's Tiny "Iron Man 2" Offer

Variety is reporting that studios are doing their best to cut costs, even though box office numbers have been strong across the board. Agents believe that the studios are using the poorly-performing economy as an excuse to cut salaries and unless you're Will Smith or Johnny Depp, actors are likely to earn less that before.

No other studio has been more vocal about slashing salaries than Marvel Studios with their "Iron Man" sequel. Marvel already replaced Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle, reportedly because Howard wanted an even more inflated paycheck than he received for the first film.

Then Samuel L. Jackson announced that Marvel will not be bringing him back as Nick Fury for "Iron Man," "Captain America" or "The Avengers." Jackson hinted that the studio is being frugal and that a different actor may be brought on to replace him.

Now, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler, Sin City) is being offered only $250,000 from Marvel for his rumored role as the villain Crimson Dynamo. Whether Rourke will still take the part is unknown, but clearly Marvel will not bargain too much.

Do you think Marvel is doing the right thing by cutting actors' salaries?

When did marvel start becoming cheap?

I think that is a wise move. next year will be a time for all to " pinch their pennies". and what is all this noise about Mickey being out of the spot light. he has been is allot of roles within the last 5 years. Man on fire, Domino, Once upon a time in Mexico..he has been working. Will Smith $$ should be cut too.

Aw, that's only barely more than 90% of Americans make in a year.

i'm just glad i'm not like terrance howard....i wasn't born rich...and i would gladly play a role without extra pay but only if the role is good...and mickey rourke is a great actor...he deserves better than that...he's been busting his ass playing roles...marvel is so greedy...it's not like they can't afford it with all the millions or billions they already have...making small time people like us suffer more because they like living in luxury...oh well...what am i complaining about anyway...it's not like they'll last forever...let them swim in their greed pool...they'll get what's coming to them

i think marvel is putting actors back in their place and bringing them back to reality. freak man, howard was the highest paid actor in iron man, and for what? "next time baby". wow, really? i do hope that sammy j manages to stay on, but, we'll see.

yeah, why should they be any different. It would be nice for a lot of them to get off cloud 9 for once in a while.

Do you think Marvel is doing the right thing cutting actors' salaries?
Do you think we're retarded?
minkowski writes:

Marvel knows the situation with the economy, and they're using the downturn to their financial advantage by getting actors on the cheap. They simply can't continue to pay exorbitant salaries.
Mattthoing writes:

Who care? They're still making more money than 90 percent of Americans.
minkowski writes:
on January 22nd, 2009 at 2:51:07 AM

THEY care, because they've forgotten what it's like to be nobody, working forty hour weeks for pathetic pay. Once you're something of a god, it's difficult to remember what came before.
minkowski writes:

Mickey Rourke may not even have a role large enough to meet his demands. Crimson Dynamo? Ughhh. Sounds like a fifties comic book wrestler. Like what peter Parker would've called himself after he got his powers but before he became Spiderman. Either that or Marvel is refusing to be held hostage by greed, high maintenance actors.

the guy is about to get nominated for best actor and they wanna offer him sh*t? i dont see any of the studio heads being forced to move out of their big bev hills mansions...all stars should tell them to stuff it
Sinestro writes:

Marvel went bankrupt in '96. They're not going to let the same thing happen again. They're going to be very careful with their studios. This thing has been a long time coming, and now it's finally taken off. Some people do not realize Marvel Studios was started in '93. It took them over a decade before they could go on and produce their own films. They're not letting things get out of hand like they did in the 90's. And, Minkowski, why do you frown on all these characters? Why are you surprised they sound like something out of a five-decade old comic when that is EXACTLY what they are. And Dynamo is not quite as bad as he sounds. He's Iron Man's Bizarro, basically.
Johnny Neat writes:

Marvel has always been cheap, no news there. The real shame is in how they cut costs which are badly chosen.
Johnny Neat writes:

@minkowski, How do you say one thing intelligent to another which is not? Amazing. These actors do get paid way too much but the studios make tons off of them so alls fair in that perspective business. As for the Crimson Dynamo, he's an original old-school B class villain for Iron Man history, much like The Mandarin which should make an appearance in IM2, from 1963... And here I had you pegged as an old school comic book reader Sci-Fi watch.
projektzborn writes:
on January 22nd, 2009 at 10:15:30 AM

if you look at cutting costs ok. but the actors should get a percentage of the profits then with a cap. if you get 125 million and spand 50mill making the movie i mean wtf. why dont we replace the entire cast. that will save money to. who here wants to be tony stark for 50k??
BREALZ writes:

I'm all for cutting costs...but if he ends up winning the oscar for best actor, they will have to up his salary....if he's smart he will take the crappy offer only to boost his street rep that he isn't an ignorant *sshole that let fame get to his head..be smart mickey, i would like to see you stick around at least for a few more years.

manichispanic writes:

i assume they'll give him a couple of points since his salary is so low. and why are we believing this sammy jackson crap? he's gonna be in the movies no matter what. he is NOT a high payed actor!
Blank x2 writes:

Sinestro writes:

"Marvel has always been cheap, no news there." That is not true at all. In their own industry Marvel tends to pay the big bucks. In fact, people signing exclusively to Marvel for more money is something common.
gunfighterii writes:

I think its ok, atleast we'll get actors who are passionate about the film that want to do it for tht reason and not for the cash.....
teuperman writes:
on January 22nd, 2009 at 8:33:56 PM

I think so a lot of actors have gotten so greedy that all they want is money and their acting sucks.... Well some of them Mickey Rourke is a good actor but sh*t I would be happy with $250,000
Gunslinger writes:
on January 23rd, 2009 at 12:44:16 AM

I say give them a lower amount up front, and points on the returns. If it does well, everyone wins. If not, the studio doesn't go under and they can keep making movies.
