Pioneer to Stop Making LaserDisc Players

Posted: January 15th, 2009 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Pioneer to Stop Making LaserDisc PlayersSubmit Comment
This comes as a big surprise to me, but Pioneer is still making LaserDisc players, even though no new LaserDisc titles have been released since the year 2000. The company has now announced that they will produce 3000 more players before calling it quits forever.

According to RegisterHardware, Pioneer has been making LaserDisc players since 1980 and has shipped 9.5 million of them. The total number of players ever produced is 16.8 million, which means that Pioneer made more than half of them.

These days, LaserDisc has found a niche in the karaoke market - two of Pioneer's last three LaserDisc players are support the singalong technology. They're also DVD players.

"It has become difficult for Pioneer to procure the parts required to produce LD players," said a company representative, who added that Pioneer will maintain "the spare parts required to restore the normal functions of Pioneer LD players during the minimum storage period."

Laserdiscs were even before VHS tapes. Simply put, the looked like large CDs that were pretty much the size of a record. They were the first technology to make possible watching a feature film at home. ;-)

I remember I watched Gattaca on a laser disc in High School. They are pretty sweet

I hate it when people root for inept technology, like my freaking dad with his eight tracks.

are you f*cking serious? you dont know what laserdiscs are? tell me that was sarcasm. I think LaserDiscs are still great, I've seen tons of films on them. RIP LaserDiscs.

Laserdiscs are, were bad ass. Once had a dual player. DVD and Laserdisk, from Pioneer. Like a combination of Dvd and records. Far better than VHS. I'd say I'll miss them, but not really. Long live DVD instead.
