"Dark Knight" Sweeps Peoples Choice Awards

"Dark Knight" Sweeps Peoples Choice AwardsSubmit Comment
"The Dark Knight" took every trophy it was nominated for at the 35th annual Peoples Choice Awards. The movie won five awards, including favorite cast, superhero, action movie and on-screen matchup for Christian Bale's Batman and the late Heath Ledger's Joker.

"On behalf of all of the cast from the movie, thank you very much to the fans," said Bale. "Here's to Heath."

The CBS ceremony was hosted by Queen Latifah and returned to the Shrine Auditorium for its typical star-studded live show format, following last year's writer's strike-friendly, pre-taped program. Stars such as Adam Sandler, Kate Hudson, Robin Williams, Hugh Laurie and Reese Witherspoon showed up to accept their awards at the ceremony.

Other recipients selected by Internet voters in categories spanning movies, television and music included "Dancing With the Stars" as favorite reality show, Carrie Underwood as favorite female singer, "House" as favorite TV drama, Brad Pitt as favorite leading man, Angelina Jolie as favorite female action star and Ellen DeGeneres as favorite talk show host.

Other winners were "WALL-E" for best family movie, "27 Dresses" for best comedy and "The Secret Life of Bees" for best independent movie.

Will Smith was named both the top male action star and best male movie star; Kate Hudson was declared the best leading lady. The best TV comedy was "Two and a Half Men" and the top TV animated comedy was "The Simpsons."

I have no doubt that the Academy does notice, and that we might even see TDK nominated as part of the Big 5. But honestly, it's kinda selfish to suggest that it was literally the best film of the year. I mean, I liked it and all, but come on... There's the reason it's called the "Academy" or "Critics' Choice" or whatever it happens to be. Critics are paid to analyze a movie based on its artistic merit as collective whole, as a synergy- not a fish out of the water like "sexiest lead actor" or some sh*t like that.

The Peoples Choice Awards is little more than a popularity contest, not a weighted and considerate measure of film's inherent artistic value. A lot of people liked TDK, and that's why it won across the slate. The people that voted spend much of their free time reading People, not Time or Newsweek. They watch ABC and FX, not PBS and A&E. The fact TDk made as much money as it did testifies that the PCA is pretty redundant, and little more than a vacant nod to a film that is already highly regarded by the average schmoe.

You can tell PCA means little to nothing by this: "Will Smith was named both the top male action star and best male movie star". Best male movie star? Will Smith? LOL.
