Warner Bros Loses Rights to "Watchmen"

Warner Bros Loses Rights to "Watchmen"Submit Comment
Warner Bros has been developing the "Watchmen" movie to get it ready for a March 6th, 2009 release. But 20th Century Fox has been claiming that they own the copyright interest to the property. As a result, the studio has previously threatened Warners that they will take them to court and will make sure that their "Watchmen" movie never gets released.

When fans first heard of this, they promised to boycott all upcoming Fox movies, including "Australia" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Out of fear, Fox has announced that if they are awarded the rights to "Watchmen," they will make sure that the film gets released on time and will work out a settlement with Warners.

The matter was taken to Los Angeles courts, where a federal judge set a January 2009 court date. The two studios began preparing for a battle. But now, the judge has ruled that there is no reason to go to court because he will grand Fox the rights.

"Fox owns a copyright interest consisting of, at the very least, the right to distribute the 'Watchmen' motion picture," the ruling said.

The judge advised both Fox and Warner to look toward a settlement or an appeal. "The parties may wish to turn their efforts from preparing for trial to negotiating a resolution of this dispute or positioning the case for review," he said.

What this means for the "Watchmen" movie is still unknown. Stay tuned.

someone drank to much eggnogg....this is a preliminary finding...warners still has the movie, but this makes sure that warners cannot release it anywhere prior to the real court date...still...f*ck fox...they didnt want this product and they waited until it was in the can before filing suit...other than wolverine, their summer is weak...they want free money...

Rupert Murdock can kiss my big hairy aussie ass. I will also refuse to see any FOX movies in 2009 if they think they have the rights to the movie

I'm tired of this f*cking sh*t, get it done and put it on theatres when its supposed to be! They will just be shooting themselves in the foot if they dont. Just give it to someone and release it, how hard is that really? Oh boo-hoo someone might not get as big a check or credibility somewhere down the line. PLEASE THE FANS f*ckERS! THIS MOVIE IS GONNA MAKE SO MUCH BANK $$$!

It pisses me off that Fox waited this long to put up a fuss about it. They've had a stake in this film since the early 90's and they take it to trial less than a year before its supposed to be released in theaters, really? Sounds like they knew they could win and just wanted somebody else to do the leg work (make the movie) then they could sweep in and just take all the rights to it without having to lift a finger. In a way I hope this movie tanks just so Fox's efforts of trying to take the rights to this movie (if any effort was taken) if financially come back on them. The amount of publicity they and marketing they have to shell out now will hopefully all be in vain. Though Im pretty sure the movie's gonna be awesome . . f*ck.

Regardless of how this turns out, FOX will not be getting a dime from me. Waiting until the last minute is such a punk move. However, WB isn't winning points with by burying Trick R' Treat.

James.Speed what war are you talking about, from what i know there si no war between Wolverine and Watchmen, both will be good, but both will be excellent if FOX didn't own them. Let MArvel own Wolverine, and give Watchmen back to WB
