"Watchmen" Trial Moved Back

Posted: December 17th, 2008 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Watchmen" Trial Moved BackSubmit Comment
A Los Angeles federal judge has moved the trial for "Watchmen" back two weeks to January 20th after declining to issue a ruling on whether Fox or Warner Bros controls the rights to the project.

Judge Gary Allen Feess set the new trial date Monday, noting that he's required to handle a criminal matter on January 6th. He also refused to make a pre-trial summary judgment -- as requested by both sides -- because, he said, the contracts between Fox and "Watchmen" producer Larry Gordon are so open to interpretation that a trial is required.

Warner Bros has not backed off a release date of March 6th for "Watchmen," directed by Zack Snyder and starring Patrick Wilson and Jackie Earle Haley.

Fox's suit, filed in February, contends that it retains distribution rights to the graphic novel penned by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. It asserts that Gordon's option to acquire Fox's remaining interest in "Watchmen" was never exercised, thereby leaving Fox with its rights under a 1994 turnaround agreement.

am i the only one who noticed the release date is meant to resemble the doomsday clock. 3, 6, 9, and 12 are the four quarters of a clock. the release date is 3/6/09 :)

Doesn't Warner Bros own DC? So how is this even going to court?

yea it does...probably has to do with the fact that alan moore got pissed about dc rummaging around through his trash to get ideas without paying out...he probably has some kind of "final cut" dealy.

What are you talking about? lol Moore has nothing to do with the project besides being the source material...Gordon purchased the rights with an agreement saying Fox would adapt way back in 94 but could keep the rights if Fox passed on it...Well a decade later, after bringing it to them several times, its safe to say Fox passed- Gordon sold to Warner and now Fox are trying to be a bunch of sneaky bastards because they know they passed on a good idea they had more than 10 years to capitalize on.
