"The Day the Earth Stood Still" Dominates Box Office

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" Dominates Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Sci-fi remake "The Day the Earth Stood Still" grossed an estimated $31 million from 3,560 theaters to come in No 1 at the domestic box office. Overseas, the film grossed an estimated $39.5 million, bringing its worldwide total to $70 million. Fox says the movie cost $80 million to produce.

Stateside, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" had little competition among new wide entries. "Nothing Like the Holidays" grossed an estimated $3.5 million from 1,671 locations to come in No. 7.

The specialty side made its own headlines in the wake of Golden Globe nominations. Despite a crowded playing field, the combined performance of a number of titles delivered one of the best weekends ever for the specialty box office.

Among openers, Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" grossed an estimated $284,000 from six theaters in LA and New York for a per location average of $47,340 -- the best of the entire weekend.

Meryl Streep/Philip Seymour Hoffman drama "Doubt" scored a per location average of $35,002 -- the second best of the frame -- as it debuted in 15 theaters with an estimated gross of $525,030.

Steven Soderbergh's two-part film "Che" bowed to an estimated $60,100 in its one-week awards run in New York and LA, posting a per screen average of $30,050.

Kate Winslet/Ralph Fiennes starrer "The Reader" opened in eight theaters and grossed an estimated $170,000 for a per screen average of $21,250.

I don't know if a movie that makes $31 million at the box office necessarily "dominates" it.

Hey Fox, put Slumdog Millionaire in 3,000 theaters instead. I'm sick of all these big stars automatically garnering up the wide releases. Up next in December it's Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, Adam Sandler, and Brad Pitt. The only good one will be with Pitt, but there is one superior film with no big names called Slumdog Millionaire. And it still has better per screen averages for over a month.

I agree with Metafact... "The Day" should've made more than that. $31 million is less than half what Twilight made in its opening weekend. That has to be a disappointment to some extent.

It's not really THAT much of a disappointment, really. "The Day" doesn't have the army of preteen girls, teen girls, and older women who still think they're teen girls that obsess over its book. If you think about it, Twilight could have been done in all hand puppets and make 4 times the money.

"Punisher: War Zone" disappeared without a trace, which is sad for me, becuase I had some hopes for it. But $7 million gross over a $35 million budget is an unmitigated disaster of "Speed Racer" or "X-Files" proportions. Strikeout for Marvel Films on this one.
