The Curious Case of Benjamin Button should win it. The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Hellboy 2 were all superior to last year's nominees as well including the winner The Golden Compass. That list is quite an accomplishment but I wouldn't say any of those are as innovative or original as the few I mentioned.

How can you watch fifteen minutes of a movie and than accurately judge it for an oscar? Last year I could not believe it when fake looking polar bears beat out the stunning graphics of Pirates and Transformers. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Are you crazy? This is not best drama it's best visual effects. Cloverfield deserves it but the oscars are RIGGED and BIASED against action films so CCBB or The Spiderwick Chronicles will probably win. OSCARS SUCK!!!!

I saw The Day the Earth Stood Still. It ain't winnin' a thing.

dwight, you just said yourself about seeing 15 mins is not enough to judge, so how can you even judge a movie's visual effects of The Curious... if you haven't seen it. Cloverfield has less visual effects than that film.

Wow, Dwight. You just completely contradicted yourself. You said we shouldn't judge a movie rom only seeing 15 minutes of it, than you basically said the same movie sucks and made comments about it. Way to go...
dwight writes:

I never said CCBB sucks it's probably a great movie. I just don't want a repeat of last year. I have not seen it so I can't say it doesn't deserve an oscar for best visual effects, but have you seen it to say it does?
Pepeman writes:

Dwight, CCBB might win, who knows at this point. The truth is, that CG is well done when it doesn't pull you out of the story but rather supports it. So yeah, DRAMA with good effects might and should win, no ?
dwight writes:

True, Mr. Pepeman but the Acadamy gives no recognition to action films (unless it's Star Wars or Lord of the Rings) Until the Acadamy decides to broaden the categories of films they give awards to, Best Visual Effects should go to a action movie.

I wouldn't be disappointed if Hellboy 2 won. Great use of practical effects that are more "special" than a lot of the cg-fueled effects that often aren't even good(Narnia, Mummy...I'm looking at you).
Schwasted writes:

No I haven't seen it but I've learned about the whole process of the aging effects used through out the entire movie. Plenty of action movies have won oscars for best visual effects. Dead Man's Chest won two years ago.
PrevalentMind writes:

Iron Man was pretty damn convincing...the lighting effects and shadows were perfect. It's going to be the one to beat in this category for sure. CCBB may be impressive- but the CG revolves around a single character. Iron Man had the whole environment.
Schwasted writes:

Two characters! It is not just Button.
PrevalentMind writes:

Okay then...two characters....against a bunch of characters wrapped in a realistic environment. Iron Man's effects served the film really well...but it's all about the innovation so Button could come out on top.
