"Wall-E" Beats "The Dark Knight" for Best PictureSubmit Comment
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association has revealed their picks for best movies of 2008, choosing the animated hit "WALL-E" as No 1 and the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" as runner-up on Tuesday.

Sean Penn was named best actor for the film biography "Milk," while Sally Hawkins received the best-actress prize for the British comic drama "Happy-Go-Lucky."

The late Heath Ledger won the critics group's supporting-actor honor for his turn as the Joker in "The Dark Knight," while Penelope Cruz was chosen for supporting actress in the Woody Allen romance "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," as well as her role in the drama "Elegy."

Danny Boyle took directing honors for "Slumdog Millionaire," with Christopher Nolan the runner-up for "The Dark Knight." "Happy-Go-Lucky" director Mike Leigh won for best screenplay.

Among runners-up for the critics awards were Mickey Rourke, best actor for "The Wrestler"; Melissa Leo, best actress for "Frozen River"; Eddie Marsan, supporting actor for "Happy-Go-Lucky"; Viola Davis, supporting actress for "Doubt"; and Charlie Kaufman, screenplay for "Synecdoche, New York."

Wall-e's enviro-clap trap obviously won the LA Times' left-leaning critics over.

Wall-e's enviro-clap trap obviously won over the LA Times' left-leaning critics. Ah, better.

Can someone please explain to me what is so special about this Wall-e movie? It's cute, ok. And as Minkowski pointed out it has a very 'enlightened' save-the-environment message that is neither subtle nor compelling. So what is it? The two little robots repeating their names back and forth for what seemed like five hours? I honestly don't understand what there is to love about this movie.

Wall-e was good, I will say that. Actually, it was great. But Ratatouille was better. Fantastic writing, beautiful animation, great story, great voice acting. Why didn't that movie get all these honors? I get it was eco-friendly or whatever, which is nice and all. But a movie needs to be judged justly.

Wall-E and The Dark Knight were my two favorite movies to come out this year, so I really don't get all the bickering. They're two very different, very fantastic movies.

Can I just say that Why in the f*ck does EVERY FILM MESSAGE have to be SUBTLE?!? Lol I hear that argument for why a film is "bad" and I just laugh...Oh no! What a crime it is to force someone to hear out a good opinion instead of whispering it to deaf ears.

It's like the world leaders getting on the air, interrupting the programming to scream out, "PLEASE MY PEOPLE- STOP MURDERING EACH OTHER!!!" and then the world going, "HEY! That's a not a very subtle way to state something that should be common knowledge to us all...so f*ck YOU."

Sounds ok except for Wall-E given top honor and Rourke losing out to Penn. Suspect at best.

@minkowski: Are you upset that Penn won best actor for portraying a gay man? It must be some kind of liberal conspiracy! *rolls eyes*
