DreamWorks to Charge $5 More for 3-D Films

DreamWorks to Charge $5 More for 3-D FilmsSubmit Comment
During a 3-D Entertainment Summit, theaters owners have stated that 3-D technology is here to stay and are demanding more 3-D films. But since the market is doing so poorly, it will be difficult to build new theaters.

"We have several significant digital cinema models and plans that are very close to completion, about 25,000 screens all in all, but the credit crunch has put a temporary block on those deals rolling out," said National Assn. of Theater Owners prexy John Fithian.

DreamWorks Animation's Jeffrey Katzenberg also spoke at the event, stating that all 3-D DreamWorks Animation movies will likely have an addition $5 charge attached to them, starting with "Monsters vs Aliens" next year. The reason for the higher price is because it costs the studio $15 million to make a film in 3-D and they are simply trying to recoup their costs.

And why do so many theater owners and studios love 3-D?

3-D screens generate twice the attendance of 2-D screens and three times the revenue. Films in the 3-D format also play longer, which means theater owners can recoup their investment in 3-D systems with just three to four releases. And 3-D Disney films (Bolt, Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little) have been outperforming 2-D versions 2.5 to 1.

Would you pay $5 more to watch a film in 3-D?

This is a horrible idea. If they want to recoup their losses then lower prices so more people can see them. Most people don't want to pay $10-12 for a movie to begin with, and definitely wont pay $15-17. And for it to only be on 3D movies is absurd. If kids are the ones going to these, do you really expect them or their parents for that matter to pay the extra $5? Every parents gonna say "No I'm not paying that. You can see the 2D version if you want though."

Typical studio money making scheme. I'd rather wait for my Blu-ray version then.

It's okay. Pixar is releasing "Up" in 3d and that is from the Monster's Inc creator so it should be good. Dreamworks can bite me.

Um...EVERY movie costs a lot but they don't raise the ticket prices. That's stupid. That's like saying: "Well, in this movie there are live swans so we'll have to recoup our costs by charging everyone an extra ten cents." Bullsh*t. The whole point of selling tickets is recouping cost...and then making a profit. Are we going to see a five dollar refund if the movie turns a profit? I don't think so!

Well they've been robbing us blind since "Technicolor!" so this is again, yet another mistake on behalf of the industry to take something that was meant to be a creative tool, and degrade it into a useless novelty after a few years.
