Details on "Forrest Gump" Sequel That Never HappenedSubmit Comment
"Forrest Gump" screenwriter Eric Roth has recently revealed that the rumored sequel, entitled "Gump and Co," was moving along until the tragic events of 9/11 happened.

"I turned in my version of the 'Forrest Gump' sequel, or Part II, whatever you call it," Roth told /Film. "It's a continuation really ó I want to start the movie literally two minutes after the end of the last one, with him on the bus bench waiting for his son to get home from school."

He continued: "But I turned in the script the night before 9/11. And we sat down, Tom [Hanks] and Bob [Zemeckis] and I, looked at each other and said, we don't think this is relevant anymore. The world had changed. Now time has obviously passed, but maybe some things should just be one thing and left as they are."

Author Winston Groom's follow-up novel "Gump and Co" was released in 1995, which follows Forrest as he stumbled through important US events in the 1980s and early 1990s. According to Wikipedia, Gump plays football for the New Orleans Saints, sells encyclopedias door-to-door, works on a pig farm, and helps develop the infamous New Coke. He accidentally crashes the Exxon Valdez, helps destroy the Berlin Wall, fights in Operation Desert Storm and meets many celebrities along the way including: Colonel Oliver North, the Ayatollah Khomeini, John Hinckley, Jim Bakker, Ivan Boesky, Ronald Reagan, Saddam Hussein, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Tom Hanks.

Are you disappointed that a sequel never happened?

This is one of the greatest movies ever. It should stand alone. I'm sure there will be a crappy remake in my time, though. Like in 2048 with Forrest "floating" his way through the "past" 40 years.

A sequel as it was written in the book would be fun.

yes. the new one sounds amazing, but it would be even better if the tragedy od 911 occured in the new story if the movie was going to be made. There fore, yes im f*cking dissapointed

What's the big deal? Should have released it. I understand it's a different world, but the movie could have been great. It takes place in the 80s and 90s, before 9/11. People would still have appreciated it today. And Hanks can make any movie good, besides Da Vinci Code. Ugh.

No. The first one was awesome. No sequels. Read the book and watch the movie in your head if you must...but let that film be. That's all I have to say about that.

As usual, WP leaves out a few details. "This book was never made into a movie, supposedly due to Groom's feud with Paramount Pictures over payments for the first movie. On March 7, 2007, CinemaBlend reported that Paramount had settled its feud with Groom, and an already-written screen adaptation of Gump and Co. could be revived.[1] According to CinemaBlend.com in a story dated 12/8/08, a screenplay based on Gump and Co. was delivered to Robert Zemtckis and Tom Hanks shortly before the events on 9/11/01. In their meetings after 9/11, they decided to put the project. A quote from the screenwriter: "We sat down, Tom [Hanks] and Bob [Zemeckis] and I, looked at each other and said, we donít think this is relevant anymore. The world had changed." Later in that interview, when asked if enough time has passed since 9/11/01 to push the film throug today, he felt that "some things should be left as they are"."

So Forrest Gump would meet Tom Hanks? Like Ocean's 12 with Julia Roberts. But was that part in the book from 95? This news is crazy but at least it's not happening.

I love when sites cite Wikipedia. Cracks me up.

Thanks for the extra info minkowski. More to the point, this film was one of those rarities that was so perfect that it didn't need a follow up. So I'm cool with the cancelled sequel.

i like the way forrest75 put it. a sequel may have been fine if they decided to put them closer together, but since so many years have passed its definitely not a good idea
